Repaying gratitude with a knife
(Baonghean.vn) - As a freelance worker in Laos, Le Van Luu (Dien Chau) was taken in and helped by Mr. Nguyen Van O. (Yen Thanh) as if he were his own son. However, due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, while drunk, Luu stabbed his benefactor to death.
The fateful night
10 years have passed, but the people of Tien Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district, Nghe An) can hardly forget the cry for help of Mr. Nguyen Van O. and his wife on that fateful night. The scream tore through the quiet night in the small hamlet. No one thought that behind that cry was a tragedy for a family.
At about 9:00 p.m. on March 2, 2023, the Investigation Police Agency of Yen Thanh District Police received a phone call denouncing a case.killingin the area. Immediately upon receiving the initial information, local officials were dispatched to the scene. The victim, a middle-aged man, had died, lying motionless in a pool of blood in his private room. The only witness to the incident was his wife, who was also unconscious.
Examining the scene, the investigating agency determined that the victim Nguyen Van O. (born in 1968) died from two stab wounds to the body. Because the stab wound was near the heart, it caused death due to acute blood loss. The victim's family was a peaceful family, without any animosity with neighbors, and now the horrific crime occurred, causing the people who witnessed it to be bewildered.

Using professional measures, the investigators quickly narrowed down the area and used all professional measures to find the perpetrator. Immediately after the incident occurred 1 day, the Investigation Police Department of Yen Thanh District Police initiated a case and urgently arrested Le Van Luu residing in Dien Thap, Dien Chau (Nghe An) for the crime of "Murder". What made the people involved even more shocked and surprised was that Le Van Luu was loved by the victim as a family member and was the victim's attempted son-in-law.
Repaying gratitude with… two stabs
Mr. Nguyen Van O. used to be a trader in Laos. He traveled abroad all year round to do business. By chance, he met and became acquainted with Le Van Luu while delivering goods together. Being from the same hometown and seeing Luu's diligence in business, the relationship between Mr. O. and his fellow countryman became increasingly close and intimate.
Admiring his hard-working fellow countryman, Mr. O. invited Luu to visit and stay for dinner at his private home in Tien Thanh commune (Yen Thanh). Here, Luu coincidentally met Nguyen Thi H. (born in 1995), Mr. O.'s second daughter. From here, Luu was captivated by H.'s youthful beauty and fell in love. With the trick of "slow and steady wins the race" and his life experience, Luu successfully won H.'s heart. When they learned that Luu and his daughter were in a relationship, Mr. and Mrs. O. both agreed and secretly hoped that their love would soon lead to marriage.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi P. (victim's wife) shared: Before Luu fell in love with H., my family considered her as one of our own children. The two had just gotten engaged, and were planning to get married at the end of the year, but this happened.
It is known that after the engagement ceremony, because they were already family, Mr. and Mrs. O. pooled their money and discussed plans to continue trading in Laos. Unexpectedly, from here, Luu began to reveal his true nature. He did not care about working hard, but spent money on parties, drinking heavily.
Mr. and Mrs. O's family advised him many times, but Luu used alcohol to find an excuse to destroy things, curse, and even beat H. black and blue. The story of Luu getting drunk and finding an excuse to cause trouble happened so many times that Mr. O's family was sad and heartbroken because they had to witness the violent and aggressive nature of their future son-in-law. Not only that, taking advantage of Mr. O's return to the country, due to gambling debts, Luu took his father-in-law's car that was left in Laos to sell to get money to pay off the debt, and continued to gamble with the rest. After going to Laos, knowing everything that happened, Mr. O still tried to borrow money from his brothers and sisters to redeem the car.
Fearing that his daughter would suffer if she married Luu, Mr. O. and his wife decided to cancel the engagement and H. also officially broke up with Luu. After being rejected, Luu went to Mr. O.'s house to apologize and make promises, but Mr. O.'s family did not accept. When he knew the situation could not be saved, Luu threatened Mr. O.'s family and then quietly left the area for a while.

A few days before the incident, Luu often appeared around Mr. O's house. However, no one expected that Luu would repay Mr. O's debt of gratitude with such fatal stabs.
Severe sentence
On the morning of July 10, 2013, the People's Court of Nghe An province held a public trial for the murder case of Le Van Luu. Most of the attendees were neighbors and relatives of Mr. O's family, everyone wanted to witness the severe sentence for the perpetrator.
Right at the trial, when asked about the motive for the crime, Luu explained that when he passed by a wedding, he saw people hanging pictures of the bride and groom, and thought about his "annulment", so he was angry and thought of a way to get revenge. Knowing that Mr. O's house only closed the front door and not the back door, he thought of the "revenge" plan as above.
In court, Luu said that his actions were due to being provoked by Mr. O's family not allowing the wedding. Meanwhile, Mrs. Nguyen Thi P. testified in court that after the time of the engagement and setting the wedding date, Luu did not work hard and was often drunk. Every time he was drunk, Luu would come to the house to cause trouble and break things. Moreover, H. was born in 1995, at that time he was not old enough to register for marriage, so the family had to postpone the wedding to avoid breaking the law and to have time for Luu to review himself.
The jury found that Luu's crime was particularly serious, but in court the defendant confessed honestly and showed remorse, so they sentenced Le Van Luu to 17 years in prison. In terms of civil matters, the jury ordered Luu to compensate the victim's family 93 million VND for mental damage, and Luu must provide 800,000 VND per month for the victim's youngest child and father.
The perpetrator had to appear in court to face the severe sentence of the law, but the pain left for his relatives and family was too great...
