Recently, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) approved a recall of 6,200 Chevrolet SS sedans from the 2014-16 model years due to a faulty steering ball joint, which can render the electric power steering system ineffective.

The ball joint is a spherical joint component that works in conjunction with the steering mechanism and connecting rod to guide and control the wheels as desired by the driver.

Ball joint failure occurs because the manufacturer did not adhere to the instructions and standards for lifting and moving the steering system assembly during assembly, causing the plastic bushings to deform, the ball joint to collide with the metal housing and deform, and over time, bending and cracking of the ball joint may occur.

Vehicles with faulty ball joints pose a safety risk. The possibility of a broken ball joint, and the resulting loss of control while driving, is extremely dangerous.

According to the latest information, approximately 6,200 Chevrolet SS sedans from the 2014-16 model years are affected by the aforementioned ball joint defect and need to be recalled for repair to prevent potential accidents.

Chevrolet has not yet announced detailed timelines for the recall and repair. All 2014-16 Chevrolet SS models affected by this steering system defect will have their ball joints inspected and replaced free of charge at all authorized dealerships.
