New satellite images of North Korean military bases suggest the country appears to be rushing preparations for a test launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), the Sun reported yesterday, citing information from 38 North, a website specializing in monitoring North Korea and affiliated with the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
Satellite images show a SINPO-class submarine, designed to launch ballistic missiles, docked at the Sinpo South shipyard in eastern North Korea.
American scientists have discovered changes in equipment on submarines, as well as significant expansion and development at the Sinpo South shipyard.Analysts believe these are likely signs of a major event about to take place.
"While the exact reason for this activity cannot yet be determined, it is likely long-term preparation for an upcoming trip or missile test launch," experts at 38 North stated.
North Korea first test-fired a missile from a submarine in 2015. US intelligence reports in May 2017 suggested that Pyongyang was likely accelerating its SLBM development program alongside the development of ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
