Speaking about North Korea's provocations during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senator Blinken said: "The U.S. anticipates North Korea will continue testing, most likely before the Workers' Party Congress, despite UN sanctions. It could be another missile test, or even a nuclear test."

Blinken argued that North Korea's recent actions are moving closer to the ability to attack the U.S. and its allies with nuclear-armed ballistic missiles.

Mr. Blinken also stated that the ongoing provocations are the biggest cause of instability on the Korean Peninsula and emphasized that the threat posed by North Korea is the number one concern not only for the United States, but also for China.

"Unless China exerts influence over North Korea, the U.S. will be forced to act to protect its allies and itself," Blinken said.

Blinken announced that the U.S. would begin deploying the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, a move that is drawing strong opposition from China.
