On the afternoon of May 26, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced that North Korea had launched several flying objects, including a short-range ballistic missile, into the Yellow Sea. This was Pyongyang's eighth weapons test since the beginning of 2026.

According to a statement from the JCS, the launches were detected by radar systems at approximately 1:00 PM on May 26 (local time). The flying objects originated from the city of Chongju (North Korea) and headed towards the Yellow Sea – the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and China.

According to initial assessments by the South Korean military, the missiles traveled approximately 80 kilometers. Currently, military officials are conducting a detailed analysis of the technical parameters and flight range, and have affirmed that they have "increased surveillance and heightened vigilance to prepare for any potential additional launches."

The South Korean military said it is working closely with the United States and Japan, maintaining a "full state of combat readiness" and continuously sharing intelligence.

The launch on the afternoon of May 26 marked North Korea's first weapons test after a 37-day lull. Prior to that, in April, North Korean state media (KCNA) confirmed that the country had conducted a ballistic missile test aimed at verifying the characteristics and destructive power of its cluster munitions.

Responding to Pyongyang's latest weapons test, at a regular press briefing held on the same day, South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il called on North Korea to respond to peaceful policies and efforts to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

In recent times, Pyongyang has repeatedly rejected proposals from Seoul to improve relations, while continuing to accelerate its weapons development programs.

International observers believe that, through a series of missile tests in recent months, North Korea is attempting to consolidate its military position in the region.
