On August 22, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against 10 Chinese and Russian companies and 6 individuals who had assisted North Korea's missile program or had "commercial energy cooperation with North Korea."
Emily Landau, who heads the arms control program at the National Security Institute based in Israel, warned that US President Donald Trump's sanctions could force North Korea to sell weapons in order to raise funds for its weapons development program.
Speaking in an interview with the I23 news agency, Landau stated: "Such cooperation exists between North Korea and Syria, as does cooperation between North Korea and Iran in the field of nuclear weapons."
The expert commented: "This is part of North Korea's dangerous activity as a nuclear enrichment nation, in that it will sell and share technology, know-how, and components related to its nuclear and chemical weapons programs to anyone who pays in cash."
This arms expert also argues that U.S. sanctions have actually boosted North Korea's arms sales, rather than hindering them. Landau asserted:
"If sanctions are imposed on North Korea, its need for cash will be enormous. Therefore, Pyongyang will have even more incentive to conduct arms sales to any country or entity willing to trade. For North Korea, only money matters."
