Aviationist reported on July 31, citing flight data from Flightradar24, that Russia's most advanced reconnaissance aircraft, the Tu-214R, which took off from Moscow, landed at a military airfield at Latakia base in Syria on the morning of July 29.
Military expertsIt is believed that, in addition to monitoring the activities of Islamic State (IS) militants and rebel groups in the Syrian battlefield, this modern long-range reconnaissance aircraft is also likely being used to collect data on the activities of US F-22 stealth fighters deployed in the region.
The Tu-214R long-range reconnaissance aircraft, developed by the Russian Air Force in the late 2000s, is considered Russia's most modern reconnaissance aircraft currently in service. The Tu-214R is equipped with the MRK-411 multi-frequency radio signal acquisition system, which includes various radars capable of operating in active and passive modes, such as electronically scanned array (ELINT) radar, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and signal intelligence and communication equipment.
The Tu-214R's antenna can intercept a wide range of enemy electronic signals such as radar waves, radio waves, mobile phone signals, and internet signals, thereby enabling electronic warfare operations such as signal spoofing, and simultaneously enabling the interception of enemy operational plans on the battlefield.
In February 2016, Russia deployed Tu-214R reconnaissance aircraft to Syria to monitor the ceasefire agreed upon by the parties.According to French military experts, by flying in Syrian airspace at a distance of only 50km from the Turkish border, the Tu-214R can monitor 60% of the area stretching from the Anatolian plateau, deep within Turkish territory, to the border.
