Farmers in Nghi Thach commune, Nghi Loc district harvest melons.

Currently in Nghi Thach there are 5 melon growing hamlets: Xuan Lac, Xuan Hoa, Xuan Tien, Xuan Thinh and Trung Khanh, with a total area of over 10 hectares.

Ms. Dao Thi Truc, a melon grower in Xuan Thinh hamlet, said: Her family converted 1 sao of land to grow melons. I see that the economic efficiency of growing melons is two or three times more profitable than growing rice and other vegetables. The advantage of growing melons is that you don't have to buy seeds. You just need to choose ripe fruits, split them open, take out the seeds, dry them, and preserve them carefully so that they can be used for planting the next crop. My family's 1 sao of melons alone brings in an income of 8 to 10 million VND each crop.

Dưa bở ở Nghị Thạch năm nay giảm năng suất, nhưng giá bán cao hơn năm trước từ 4.000 - 5.000 đồng/kg
Melon yield in Nghi Thach this year is lower, but the selling price is 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg higher than last year.

According to melon growers, this year's melon yield is lower than the previous crop, but the quality of the melon is delicious and the price is higher than previous years. This year's average melon price is 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg higher than last year, so people's income still reaches nearly 200 million VND/ha.

Melon or cracked melon.

Previously, the area of melon grown in Nghi Thach was only about 1 hectare, mainly in Trung Khanh hamlet. Since 2005, the area has been continuously expanded, concentrated in Trung Khanh, Xuan Lac, Xuan Tien, Xuan Hoa, Xuan Thinh hamlets. By 2007, the commune had changed the crop structure on highland in the fields of Cang Ba, Nuong Toan, Sau Dinh... without proactive water sources.

Mr. Dang Huu Thin - Chairman of Nghi Thach Commune Farmers' Association said: "The economic efficiency of melon is very promising, opening up a new direction for Nghi Thach people, overcoming difficulties due to complex farming terrain. The commune also focuses on converting crop structure, upgrading irrigation systems, encouraging the expansion of melon growing areas, and at the same time promoting the transfer of science and technology for farmers to apply, improving the quality and yield of crops."

Customers who love Nghi Thach melon products should go to the fields to buy them.

Melon or also known as cracked melon, is currently considered a specialty in Nghi Loc. Because this type of melon has a thin skin, when ripe, the flesh turns into powder and expands, causing the skin to crack, with a sweet, fragrant and cool taste.
