Growing organic pineapples in Quynh Luu yields an income of over 400 million VND per hectare.
(Baonghean.vn) - Tan Thang commune, Quynh Luu district, is the largest pineapple growing area in the province with over 850 hectares, including over 30 hectares of organically grown pineapples, achieving outstanding income of over 400 million VND/hectare/season.

Along the vast pineapple-growing hillsides of Tan Thang commune (Quynh Luu district), farmers are busily harvesting pineapples to supply traders. On the roads leading to the pineapple fields, cars line up waiting to load the produce. A new feature this year is that areas of organically grown pineapples have had a bumper crop, fetching prices four times higher than conventionally grown pineapples.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, from Hamlet 1, Tan Thang Commune, along with his wife and children, excitedly said: "Our family has over 5 hectares of organic pineapples planted since 2018. Previously, the price was around 10,000 VND/kg, but this season it has skyrocketed to 20,000 VND/kg. Each hectare of organic pineapple yields 20 tons, generating revenue of over 400 million VND/hectare/season."

This type of pineapple is easily marketable, with several supermarkets in the southern provinces placing orders directly from the farm. However, growing pineapples organically requires strict adherence to regulations, such as: no herbicides, no pesticides, and no growth stimulants; primarily using well-rotted manure for fertilization. While organic pineapples may have lower yields, their economic value is very high.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Chairman of the Tan Thang Commune People's Committee, said: Tan Thang is the locality with the largest pineapple growing area in the province, with 1,200 hectares, of which over 500 hectares are currently being harvested. The total production of the commune is estimated at nearly 6,000 tons, bringing a considerable income to the people. The pineapples are mainly Queen and Cayen varieties, which are of good quality, high yield, and have been favored by the market for many years.

This year, pineapples have generally yielded a good harvest and fetched good prices, averaging over 40 tons per hectare. Selling at 7,500 VND per kilogram, this brings in nearly 300 million VND per hectare per crop. Of this, over 30 hectares in the commune, cultivated by local people as organic pineapple farms, have all achieved incomes exceeding 400 million VND per hectare per crop. In the long term, the commune is encouraging households to expand the area under organic pineapple cultivation, or "clean pineapples," to increase economic value per unit area.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, the market for pineapples is currently very favorable. From 2022 to the present, the Dong Giao Pineapple Factory has purchased over 4,500 tons of pineapples from farmers in the commune (reaching over 80% of the production). Through agreements between the factory and households, the factory buys pineapples from farmers at market prices ranging from 6,000 to 7,500 VND/kg depending on the weight of the fruit, with no quantity limit. The factory directly purchases and transports the pineapples.
The factory signed the contract. The consumption of pineapples is truly important for farmers, aiming to develop a stable pineapple raw material area, and most importantly, to alleviate concerns about market access for pineapple growers.

The reason for the high price of pineapples in Tan Thang commune, Quynh Luu district, is the hot summer weather, which has led to a surge in demand for pineapples to cool down, not to mention that markets in the South are also flocking to the Tan Thang pineapple growing area to purchase them.
With a bumper pineapple crop and favorable prices, the people are confident in their production. Tan Thang commune has directed its hamlets to introduce high-yielding, improved varieties to replace older pineapple plantations. Simultaneously, they are investing in modern irrigation systems and applying advanced pineapple cultivation techniques to achieve high yields and quality, building a sustainable brand for Tan Thang pineapples.
