Growing imported guava varieties generates an income of over 200 million VND per year.
(Baonghean.vn) - To replace the less efficient guava varieties, Mr. Dang Minh Tan in Quynh Hong commune, Quynh Luu district (Nghe An province) boldly bought Taiwanese guava seedlings to plant. This variety has proven to be highly effective and economically viable, yielding many times more profit than other varieties.

Quynh Hong is the commune with the most guava cultivation in Quynh Luu district. Almost every family grows guava trees in their garden, with even the smallest farms having at least 5 trees and larger farms having dozens. However, the guava variety currently grown by the people is the common variety, resulting in low efficiency and value. In 2012, Mr. Dang Minh Tan pioneered the introduction of Taiwanese guava varieties and successfully cultivated them in his hometown.
Mr. Tan said that his family used to grow 50 ordinary guava trees, but after many years of harvesting, they found the yield to be low, with each tree only producing about 50 kg of fruit at a low price. He happened to see a model of growing Taiwanese guava in Binh Phuoc that yielded high income. After surveying his family's land conditions, he decided to go to Hanoi Agricultural University 1 to buy Taiwanese guava seedlings to try growing them.

After purchasing 80 Taiwanese guava saplings, he planted them around his fish pond on an 8-acre plot of land; he also planted 50 regular guava trees for comparison. After one year of planting and caring for them, the Taiwanese guava variety produced more fruit and had a significantly higher yield than the regular guava. In the third year, the Taiwanese guava trees produced even more fruit. With 80 Taiwanese guava trees, Mr. Tan harvested approximately 12 tons of fruit this year, earning 240 million VND per year.
“Last year, I harvested over 120 kg of fruit per tree, selling it at 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, bringing in 2 million - 2.5 million VND per tree. This year, the yield is even higher, so I expect the income to be even greater…” Mr. Tan shared.

| Taiwanese guavas average 3 fruits per kilogram, are sweet, and have few seeds, making them popular among locals. |
Taiwanese guava trees can be harvested after one year of planting. The first harvest yields few fruits, but the following year will produce a lot more. However, gardening requires diligence and a lot of effort. To produce high-quality guavas with large fruits, proper care is needed from the time the flowers bloom. Regularly loosen the soil around the base of the tree to promote root development, and prune branches and leaves close to the base to improve air circulation and help the tree nourish the fruit. When the flowers begin to bear fruit, each fruit should be individually wrapped in plastic bags to prevent insect damage or fungal rot. This also helps the guava retain its characteristic, attractive green color. |
