Russian Mi-34M1 helicopter makes its first test flight with VK-650V engine.
The prototype of the Mi-34M1 light helicopter has just completed its first flight using the domestically produced VK-650V engine, marking a significant step forward for the Russian aviation industry.
The Russian Federal Ministry of Industry and Trade has just announced the completion of the first test flight of the Mi-34M1 light helicopter prototype. The most notable aspect of this test flight was the appearance of the VK-650V engine, a product of entirely Russian technological independence.
Operational capabilities and technical specifications
The 10-minute test flight demonstrated the Mi-34M1's high maneuverability and control stability. The test pilots who directly operated the aircraft highly appreciated the aerodynamic characteristics and responsiveness of the new propulsion system, even under challenging operating conditions.
The VK-650V engine is manufactured by UEC-Klimov (part of the Rostec Group). It is a modular engine design, optimizing maintenance and offering high wear resistance. An integrated digital automatic control system automates operation, ensuring optimal performance at all stages of flight.
Improvements on the upgraded Mi-34M1 variant.
Besides the new engine, the Mi-34M1 has also undergone comprehensive upgrades in safety systems and electronics. The helicopter is equipped with an accident-prevention fuel system and a new generation of avionics. These improvements give the Mi-34M1 a competitive edge over single-engine light helicopters manufactured abroad.
Speaking about the event, Gennady Abramenkov, Deputy Director of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, emphasized: “The launch of test flights of the upgraded Mi-34M1 helicopter is a significant event. The project demonstrates the industry’s capability in manufacturing modern aircraft entirely based on domestic technology.”
The success of the Mi-34M1 also follows the earlier advances of the LMS-901 Baikal light multirole aircraft, which also recently made its first flight with the domestically produced VK-800 propulsion system and AV-901 rotor.
