Trump press conference after US-North Korea summit

Thu Giang - June 12, 2018 15:11
(Baonghean.vn) - At 4:00 p.m. on June 12, Singapore time, or 3:00 p.m. Vietnam time, President Donald Trump spoke to the media about the historic summit that just took place between the US and North Korea.

Trump speaks to the media

President Trump addresses the press after his summit with Kim Jong-un in Singapore. Trump steps up to the podium after a carefully prepared videotape about Kim's unique opportunity to change the path of North Korea.

Trump claimed it was “a tape” sent to Mr Kim’s representatives and it “contains a lot of content. It contains something that can be done”.

Trump says Kim promised to destroy missile engine test site

US President Trump says leader Kim Jong-un said North Korea is destroying a major missile engine testing site.

“North Korea is destroying a major missile engine test site,” Trump said.

This commitment was not included in the joint statement signed by the two sides, but Trump affirmed: "We agreed to that after the agreement was signed."

Trump also summarized the agreement he and Kim signed earlier. He said Kim reaffirmed his “unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

“We also agreed on robust negotiations to implement the agreement as soon as possible,” the US President said.

Trump stressed that Kim “wants to do it.”

“This is not the past,” he said. “This is not another administration that never got it started. And therefore never finished it.”

Trump: Summit wouldn't have happened without Otto Warmbier's death

Responding to questions about North Korea's human rights issues, especially about Otto Warmbier, the American student who was detained by North Korea and died upon being returned to the US.

“Otto Warmbier was a special person, and he will be in my life for a very long time,” Trump said. “His parents were good friends of mine. I think without Otto, none of this would have happened. Something happened that day. It was a terrible thing. It was brutal. But a lot of people started to focus on what was going on, including North Korea. I really think Otto was a man who did not die in vain. I told his parents that. A special young man. And I have to say, special parents, special people. Otto did not die in vain.”

The US will stop joint military exercises.

Trump asserted that the US would stop “war games,” referring to joint military exercises with South Korea that North Korea has long criticized as provocative.

Trump also said he hoped to eventually withdraw US forces from South Korea, but insisted “that is not part of the equation right now.”

“I want to get our troops out of there. I want to bring our soldiers home,” Trump said. “But that’s not part of the equation right now. I hope that will eventually happen.”

Trump said he had agreed to stop the “war games” because he considered them “very provocative” and claimed it would save the US “a tremendous amount of money”.

The Korean War will end soon

Trump said he hopes the Korean War will soon end after 70 years.

“Nearly 70 years ago, an extremely bloody conflict broke out on the Korean Peninsula. Countless lives were lost in the conflict, including tens of thousands of brave Americans. While an armistice was signed, the war has never ended. But we can all hope now that it will soon end. And it will.”

Trump continued: “The past does not necessarily define the future. Yesterday's conflict does not necessarily mean tomorrow's war. And as history has proven time and again, adversaries can truly become friends.”

At another summit in April, the leaders of North and South Korea pledged to formally end the Korean War, 65 years after the cessation of hostilities.

Trump praises Kim's ability to lead the country

Trump praised Kim Jong-un's ability to lead a country at such a young age, commenting on Kim's tactics.

“He’s very talented,” Trump said, citing his ability “to take on a situation like he did at 26 and run it.”

Trump confident Kim Jong-un will keep his end of the bargain

Trump believes that the North Korean leader “will honor” the document the two sides signed.

“He was very sure that he wanted to do this — I think he probably wanted to do this as much as I did or even more than I did. They saw a bright future for North Korea.”

Trump “really” trusts Kim Jong-un

On June 12, Trump affirmed that he truly “trusts the North Korean leader.” When asked by a CNN reporter if he trusts Kim, Trump replied: “Yes, I do. I want him to want to make a deal.”

Kim accepted an invitation to visit the White House.

Trump told reporters that he would visit Pyongyang “at a certain time.”

“It will be a day I look forward to taking place at the right time,” he said.

Trump added that he had invited Kim Jong-un to the White House and Kim had accepted, but the visit would take place “at the appropriate time.”

Trump: Sanctions will be lifted when nuclear “is no longer a factor”

Trump said he would push for North Korea to denuclearize “as quickly as possible” but confirmed this could take a long time.

“Scientifically, it’s going to take a while,” Trump said. “But as soon as they start the process, it’s pretty much done.”

He affirmed that the process would begin “very soon”, adding that sanctions would be lifted “when we are sure that nuclear is no longer a factor”.

Trump affirms “nothing given up” in dialogue with Kim Jong-un

In response to criticism that the US gained nothing from the Trump-Kim meeting, the US President spoke up to defend himself.

“The president agreed to meet, he gave up too much,” he repeated the criticism.

“I didn’t give up anything. I’m here. I didn’t sleep for 25 hours, but I think it was the right thing to do,” he said.

Trump affirmed that the summit was “good for the US as well as for North Korea”.

“Yeah, sure, they had a meeting,” Trump said, but “only someone who doesn’t like Donald Trump” would say he got nothing in return, citing Kim’s commitment to complete denuclearization, as well as the return of three American hostages, and a pledge to recover the remains of “fallen American heroes.”

“Meeting is not a big deal,” he continued. “I think we should meet and discuss various topics.”

The US will not bear the cost of North Korea's denuclearization

Asked how the North Korean regime could pay for denuclearization while under sanctions, Trump said South Korea and Japan would be able to provide financial assistance.

The United States “will not have to help them,” Trump said.

Trump expects another meeting with Kim

Asked about the possibility of a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, President Trump told reporters that “We may need another summit or another meeting,” although this has not yet been scheduled.

Trump told Kim: “You can own the best hotels in the world”

Trump said he brought Kim Jong-un to the negotiating table by showing him what the future could be if the North Korean leader chose the path of peace.

Trump, a veteran of the real estate industry, said he told Kim that included beautiful beaches, great apartment complexes and “the best hotels in the world.”

“For example, they have beautiful beaches,” he said. “Everybody sees that whenever they fire cannons into the sea. I said, ‘Look at that, man. Would it make a great apartment building?’ I said, ‘Instead of doing that, you could have the best hotels in the world.’”

“Think about it from a real estate perspective,” Trump asserted. “South Korea and China and they own the land inland. How boring is that?”

Trump said Kim reviewed a video showing all of this on an iPad, and he was impressed by what he saw.

“It's a version of what could happen,” he said.

This is Trump's first full press conference in more than a year.

Trump took questions from reporters for more than an hour at a press conference in Singapore, following his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The last time Trump had such a press conference was on February 16, 2017.
