Poultry egg prices increase, Nghe An farmers excited to start flocking

With a scale of 11,000 laying hens, every day,Mr. Tran Xuan Son's farm(Nghia Hung, Nghia Dan) collected 8,000 eggs. All eggs were supplied to the domestic market, some schools, bakeries, candy shops and wholesale to customers. If at this time last year (2021), the price of eggs "hit rock bottom" at only 1,100 - 1,500 VND/egg, causing farmers to suffer heavy losses, then since Tet until now, the price of chicken eggs has stabilized again and gradually increased. Currently, with the price of 2,600 VND/egg (red chicken eggs) and 2,700 VND/egg (white chicken eggs), it has nearly doubled compared to the same period last year and increased by 200-300 VND/egg compared to 1 month ago.

With this price, egg farmers are starting to make a profit. Mr. Tran Xuan Son said: “Egg prices have not increased sharply, but they are stable and the market is easier to consume. Eggs are imported and sold as soon as they are harvested, without any backlog. However, along with the increase in egg prices, the price of animal feed and other input costs have also increased sharply, so the income of farms is still low.”

Always maintaining over 20,000 laying hens/cow, there was a time when Mr. Nguyen Duc Luan, the owner of a livestock farm in Yen Due block, Dong Vinh ward, had to reduce the size of his flock to 2/3 when egg prices dropped too low and feed prices were too high, causing him to lose 3-5 million VND per day. From July 2021 to now, egg prices have gradually increased and stabilized, especially after the Covid-19 epidemic was controlled, food and beverage business activities were normalized, the consumption of chicken eggs was also easier, prices increased slightly. Therefore, he was very excited. "With the current price being quite high, eggs are easy to consume, and farmers make a profit," said Mr. Luan.

Egg priceThe price of white farmed chicken eggs has also been adjusted up accordingly. Accordingly, the price of white farmed chicken eggs is 3,500 VND/egg, and that of red chicken eggs is 3,300 VND/egg. Retailer chicken eggs alone have increased to 4,500-5,000 VND/egg. At supermarkets, the price of chicken eggs from reputable breeding companies has been adjusted to 5,000 VND/egg (an increase of 500-700 VND/egg). Not only chicken eggs, the price of duck eggs and quail eggs has also increased by 200-300 VND/egg (duck eggs) and 1,500 VND/dozen (quail eggs). The price of fertilized chicken eggs, fertilized duck eggs and fertilized quail eggs has also increased following the price of regular eggs.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet, a poultry egg trader at Vinh wholesale market, said: “In the North, egg prices have increased and large livestock companies have increased prices sharply. In Nghe An, egg prices have only increased slightly, and currently, livestock farms have increased egg prices by 2-300 VND/egg compared to before.”

According to farm owners and small traders, the increase in egg prices is due to two reasons. Firstly, the high price of animal feed and input costs has forced egg prices to adjust upwards for farmers to make a profit. Secondly, after egg prices hit rock bottom in the same period last year, many farms reduced their herds and scale, so supply was more limited. Meanwhile, the epidemic has been controlled, so food services are recovering and becoming more active, and the demand for poultry eggs has increased sharply.

Poultry egg prices are high,Farmers are making a profit, so many farms are confident in investing in re-herding and expanding the scale of their barns. Mr. Tran Xuan Son, owner of a laying hen farm in Nghia Hung, Nghia Dan, said: “I am currently investing in an additional row of barns with a scale of 9,000 birds. In early June 2022, there will be a flock of 4,500 birds; by the end of this year, there will be another flock of 4,500 birds, bringing the total farm size to 20,000 birds/batch. I just hope that the market will stabilize, prices will be adjusted appropriately, commensurate with input costs so that farmers like us can feel secure in production.”

The increase in poultry egg prices is in line with market rules when demand increases and input costs for livestock farming increase. The restoration of poultry farming for eggs is necessary, but households need to calculate and consider to enter the appropriate flock, reasonably space the flock, avoid mass, increase the "hot" flock causing surplus, difficult to consume. According to data from the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, the total poultry flock in the province as of April 2022 is estimated at 31,867 thousand heads, an increase of 8.10% (+2,388 thousand heads) over the same period last year. Of which, the total chicken flock is estimated at 26,612 thousand heads, an increase of 9.36% (+2,277 thousand heads) over the same period in 2021.
