According to Xinhua News Agency, the explosion occurred yesterday afternoon, October 24, at a prefabricated house located in a densely populated residential area in Xinmin City. The explosion destroyed many nearby buildings, including the city hospital.
Local authorities confirmed that at least 10 people were killed and 157 injured in the explosion. Rescuers spent the night digging through the rubble to find survivors and determine the cause of the explosion.
Several senior city officials were present to oversee the rescue effort. There was a power outage during the night, but rescue efforts continued.
The cause of the incident is not yet clear, but Chinese news sites say illegally stored explosives caused the explosion.
Earlier in 2015, a chemical warehouse exploded in the port of Tianjin, killing 173 people. A subsequent investigation found that the chemical warehouse had been operating without a license.
