China threatens Silicon Valley's dominance.

• September 7, 2016 15:32

Silicon Valley is no longer just a geographical concept; it has become a symbol, a source of inspiration, and a breeding ground for the mindset and culture of tech professionals.

In 1991, based on the idea of hypertext, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW), ushering in a revolution and ushering in a new chapter in human history, where people could easily access and exchange information. Since then, the first applications have emerged, such as the Navigator 1.0 browser and Web Mail services.

Located in what was then Northern California, Silicon Valley referred to the inventors and manufacturers of silicon chips (microprocessors made of silicon). Gradually, it became synonymous with high technology and innovation, a promised land for startups, and simply referred to as "home" by the giants.

There is only one Silicon Valley in America…

In recent years, Silicon Valley has garnered more attention with the emergence of numerous companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple, and Intel. It has become a source of inspiration and a driving force behind the development of cities like Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Cupertino. However, many argue that Silicon Valley doesn't necessarily have to be a specific location; it can exist simply as a conceptual idea.

This area has been known as a technology hub for decades. From the military technology center of the U.S. Navy and Aerospace in the 1930s, to clusters of telegraph companies, radio stations, and universities, all laid the foundation for the Silicon Valley of today.

Investors and large companies are attracted here by the available infrastructure and human resources. In turn, this has boosted economic growth, employment, and housing conditions in the area.

People living and working in this valley have supported the vision of a unique Silicon Valley by forming small communities to exchange ideas and foster the development of their own distinct cultures.

…or does it only exist in our minds?

Although the United States has many other technology hubs springing up all over the country, including New York, Los Angeles, and the Carolinas, none have the scale, scope, and influence of Silicon Valley.

Perhaps the reason is that the technology hubs that emerged later didn't have as much time to develop and foster the mindset and culture that Silicon Valley took decades to cultivate.

However, recent technological breakthroughs in China and Israel have proven that America isn't the only country with a "Silicon Valley." This concept can exist and inspire as a way of thinking for everyone.

Forbes magazine once published an article about the risky investment of locating car manufacturers in remote locations far from Silicon Valley, exemplified by billionaire Elon Musk's Gigafactory in the Nevada desert. The success of such an investment doesn't depend 100% on geographical location; it's also influenced by other factors such as capital and human resources.

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, the German car manufacturer, enthusiastically shared: “After interacting with major companies in Silicon Valley, our staff seems to have been encouraged and inspired. Their work speed, ability to handle pressure, and acceptance of failure have all improved significantly.”

Ultimately, reality has shown that starting a business in Silicon Valley doesn't guarantee success. Any city can become a technology hub, and any country can have its own "Silicon Valley" if its leaders possess the ability to think strategically and apply their skills effectively. In the future, it's highly likely that other "technology valleys" will emerge, developing together and fundamentally changing the face of technology worldwide.
