According to Kyodo, on October 24, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga expressed disappointment at China's inauguration in Shanghai of a monument symbolizing women forced to work in brothels serving the Japanese military during wartime.

"Such an action cannot be considered to contribute to improving Japan-China relations, and it is extremely regrettable," Suga said at a press conference.

The monument, unveiled on October 22 at Shanghai Normal University, features a seated statue of a girl dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, next to another girl dressed in Korean clothing, similar to the statue placed in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul in 2011.

According to sources familiar with the matter, this is the first of its kind in China. Similar statues have been displayed in the US, Canada and Australia.
