China considers the US military's establishment of the Space Command to be an act of weaponizing space.

"China has consistently called for peaceful action in space and opposes the armament of weapons and the arms race in space. We also oppose turning space into a new battlefield."AFPOn December 19, a statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying was quoted.

The statement was issued after US President Donald Trump ordered the establishment of the Space Command on December 18, an agency under the direct control of the Pentagon and overseeing all of the country's military space activities.

According to US media, the Space Command will be comparable in size to other US military commands, such as the Central Command in the Middle East or the Indo-Pacific Command in Asia, and will require the establishment of a headquarters as well as the appointment of a commander and deputy commander.

In June, Trump directed the creation of a space force, with an organizational structure on par with the five traditional branches of the U.S. military. The establishment of the Space Command is seen as a step toward achieving this goal. However, the President's intention has also faced considerable opposition from the Department of Defense, as creating a sixth branch of the military would consume significant time and budget.

Beijing has also recently stepped up its space activities. Earlier this month, China became the first nation to successfully launch a probe to the far side of the Moon, a move that demonstrates its ambition to become a future space superpower.
