China surpasses 20 million electric vehicle charging stations: Rapid growth rate.
China officially aims to reach 20.092 million electric vehicle charging stations by the end of 2025, representing nearly 50% growth and boasting the world's largest energy infrastructure network.
According to data from China's National Energy Administration and National Charging Infrastructure Service Monitoring Platform, as of the end of December 2025, the country had a total of 20.092 million electric vehicle charging stations. This figure marks a 49.7% year-on-year increase, helping China maintain its position as the country with the world's largest electric vehicle charging network, meeting the operational needs of more than 40 million new energy vehicles.

Public and private charging infrastructure
China's charging infrastructure is clearly divided between public and private segments, with impressive figures in terms of capacity and scale. Specifically, private charging stations account for a large proportion in terms of number, while public charging stations are focusing on improving fast charging efficiency.
| Charging cylindrical type | Number (million pillars) | Year-on-year growth | Technical specifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public charging station | 4,717 | 31.9% | Average power output: 46.53 kW |
| Private charging station | 15,375 | 56.2% | Total capacity: 134 million kVA |
| Total | 20,092 | 49.7% | Serving over 40 million vehicles |
Exponential growth rate
Notably, the pace of charging infrastructure construction in China is accelerating at an astonishing rate. It took the country 13 years (from 2006 to 2019) to reach its first million charging stations. However, the time to increase from 1 million to 10 million charging stations is now only 5 years (by June 2024).
Most notably, the surge from 10 million to 20 million charging stations took only 18 months. This demonstrates the country's tremendous focus on developing its electric vehicle ecosystem. Besides the increase in quantity, the efficiency of public charging stations also rose by 33% compared to the previous year, significantly improving the user experience.
Nearly complete coverage nationwide.
Geographically, China's electric vehicle charging network is not concentrated in major cities but has spread widely throughout rural areas and major transportation routes. Currently, 71,500 charging stations have been installed in highway service areas, achieving a coverage rate of over 98% nationwide.
Furthermore, this balanced development is also demonstrated by the fact that 19 provinces in China have achieved the goal of comprehensive charging facility coverage in every village. This strategy not only boosts electric vehicle sales but also ensures energy security and the country's long-term carbon emission reduction roadmap.
