Dublin City University has launched a new program designed to harness the talents and energy of retirees and those nearing retirement as they seek new challenges. This program will provide participants with opportunities to develop new skills through a holistic approach that integrates academic, personal, and professional growth.
The school's principal, Brian MacCraith, said the program aims to provide opportunities to improve the lives of the growing number of older adults.
The most recent statistics show that Ireland has around 540,000 people aged 65 and over, and this number is expected to increase to 1.4 million within the next 25 years.
According to Brian MacCraith, such educational programs help society access the valuable and experienced resources of older adults, who are still able to contribute significantly.
A recent study in the US found that three out of five working retirees see retirement as an opportunity to transition to a different type of work.
David Simpson, 60, recently retired as co-manager of the accounting firm Simpson Savier, is the target audience for this learning program. He said, “I like to think of myself as 60 years old and still young, with so much to learn and contribute. Life expectancy is increasing, and we will have more energy and time to give.”
The program director, Ronan King, argues that thanks to advances in science, technology, nutrition, and lifestyle, many people today live longer and healthier lives. This means that governments, universities, and individuals need to rethink and plan for the elderly to contribute to society, rather than becoming a burden.
Several other universities are focusing on “lifelong learning,” viewing it as a key area of educational development in the coming years.
