On the afternoon of December 23, on National Highway 6 in Phong Lang commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La province, the authorities signaled to stop a 5-seat car driven by Long, traveling from Dien Bien to Son La for inspection.
However, Long drove his car into a vehicle of the Thuan Chau District Traffic Police on duty. When stuck on the side of the road, Long used a gun to fight the police and then left the car and fled into the forest.
Checking the abandoned car with license plate 30H 112.09, Mazda CX5, the police discovered 22 cakes of drugs, 17 kg of crystal meth and some other evidence.

300 officers, soldiers, and forces from communes, villages, towns, and police dogs were mobilized to search for the suspect. Because Long used a gun to fight against the authorities and then escaped, it was getting dark and the weather was very cold, so the pursuit encountered many difficulties.
In addition to setting up checkpoints in key areas that suspects could take advantage of to escape, the police have closely coordinated with the Party Committee, authorities and people of neighboring communes to control and track them down.
The forces captured Long after more than a day of searching.
