According to RIA Novosti, The Economist, citing sources, reported that martial law could be lifted in Ukraine this summer and presidential elections could be held.

"Mr. Zelensky convened a meeting last week to direct his team in organizing the vote following the complete ceasefire. Lifting martial law is the necessary first step to begin the electoral process. Sources did not give an exact timeframe, but most believe Mr. Zelensky is aiming for the summer," – The Economist reported.

According to the publication, the current leader of Ukraine intends to run for election again.

Earlier, US President's special envoy Steven Witkoff said in an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson that Ukraine had agreed to hold elections.

Volodymyr Zelensky's presidential term expired on May 20, 2024. The 2024 Ukrainian presidential election was canceled due to martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky stated that "the election is not the right time now." Martial law was declared in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and the following day President Zelensky signed a decree ordering general mobilization.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that, according to preliminary assessments, the only legally competent authority in Ukraine is the parliament and its speaker.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the US was discussing territorial issues, demarcation lines, and control of nuclear power plants as part of an effort to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, added that the US considers the central issue in the conflict in Ukraine to be the status of regions annexed by Russia and international recognition of this status.
