Making your own dishwashing liquid is easy
This detergent has a bitter-sweet taste, smells like sticky rice tea, with a hint of cinnamon and a little grapefruit peel. It is not sticky like industrial detergent, does not waste rinsing water, and does not dry out or crack nails.
Below is a recipe for homemade dishwashing liquid made from 100% natural ingredients shared by Ms. Lien Huong, a person knowledgeable about organic foods and natural products:

From soapberries, Ms. Lien Huong makes her own cleaning solution that is harmless to hands and environmentally friendly. |
Ingredient:
- The tray includes dried soapberries with seeds removed and cinnamon sticks to cook together.
- In the ceramic plate are the soapberries after being cooked and taken out of the water. They swell and are no longer shiny like the dried fruit.
- Sieve to filter the finished product. When pouring the solution into the foaming bottle, filter it through a cloth to avoid clogging the nozzle.
- Mesh bag to put soap nuts in the top-loading washing machine. After boiling the soap nuts in dishwashing liquid, you can still use them for washing or drying them. Next week, cook another batch - that is, use them over and over again until the foam is gone.
- Grated grapefruit peel.

Grate the grapefruit peel with a special tool, take only the very thin outer layer of essential oil and steep it like making tea. |
Making:
- 1 full 200ml cup of dried Vietnamese soapberries with seeds removed, about 20 fruits.
- 1 cinnamon bark stick.
- Peel of 1/3 grapefruit. You can use orange or lemon peel, lemon peel is the most fragrant.
- 1 liter of tap water or well water, rain water.
- Soak soapberries in water overnight, about 12 hours. Soak in a glass, enamel, or stainless steel pot.
- Boil soapberry and cinnamon, from the time it boils, simmer for another 45 minutes.
- Grate the grapefruit peel with a specialized tool, taking only the very thin outer layer of essential oil. When the soapberry is almost done cooking, steep the grated grapefruit peel like making tea, 1/3 of the grapefruit as in the plate needs 100ml of boiling water. Pour the juice into the pot of soapberry, boil again then remove from heat.
- Let cool, filter through a sieve, put into a bottle, a foaming bottle is much more economical and convenient.
Finished product:
- 250ml low foaming bottle, light in color, made from soapberry/cinnamon/grapefruit dishwashing liquid just finished cooking this afternoon. Can be used for about a week.
- 400ml high foam bottle, dark color, is soapberry/soapberry detergent for colored clothes, wool, silk... without mixed essential oils. For hand washing or front-loading washing machines.
