Proper safe driving posture for women.

A study has shown that even with seatbelts on, female drivers are 47% more likely to suffer serious injuries in a collision than male drivers due to their smaller stature and improper driving position.

Airbags can deploy at speeds up to 300 km/h, so if you're sitting too close to the steering wheel during a collision, you could be seriously injured.

Therefore, sitting in a proper driving position can help you avoid dangerous situations and ensure that the vehicle's safety systems work effectively to protect you.

Women with smaller builds often find it difficult to find a comfortable and safe driving position. But with just a few simple adjustments, the outcome can be changed in the event of a collision.

Below are some tips on proper driving posture for women, based on recommendations from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), to help women stay safer behind the wheel.

1. Tilt the steering wheel down.

Adjust the steering wheel so that it is pointed toward the driver's chest, not their head or neck.

2. Move the driver's seat backward.

Move your driver's seat back as far as possible, but remember that the brake and accelerator pedals should still be comfortably within reach of your feet. The driver should be at least 25 cm away from the steering wheel, measured from chest to center.

3. Lean the chair back slightly.

If, after moving your seat back, you're still too close to the steering wheel, try leaning back a little. If that makes it harder to see, try raising your seat or placing a firm, non-slip cushion on it.

If you've tried both of the above methods and you're still sitting more than 25 cm closer to the steering wheel, you'll need to consider buying pedal extenders.

4. Place your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions on the steering wheel.

The NHTSA now recommends that all drivers, not just women but men, should place their hands on the opposite side of the steering wheel. This is a more comfortable and stable driving position, and it also prevents your hands from touching the airbag.

5. Always fasten your seatbelt correctly.

Fastening your seatbelt is one of the ways to save your life and prevent injury in the event of an accident. For your seatbelt to be effective, it's crucial that you fasten it correctly.

Adjust the seatbelt so that the strap rests against your chest from your shoulders, not on your neck or under your arms. The lower waist belt should fit snugly against your hips.

6. Safety advice for pregnant women

When a pregnant woman wears a seatbelt, it becomes the baby's first car seat. If worn correctly, it can keep both mother and baby safe. Therefore, pregnant women should follow these six tips to achieve the perfect position:

- Lift your abdomen and ensure the seatbelt is low and resting on your thighs. - Pull the seatbelt up over your shoulders to ensure a snug fit. - Make sure the seatbelt is positioned between your chest. - If possible, tilt your steering wheel slightly upwards. - Keep your seatback as straight as possible, as reclining can affect how the lumbar support belt compresses the uterus during a collision. - Push your seat back as far and comfortably as possible to create distance between you and the airbag.
