CBSOn October 25, Mr. Powell revealed his decision to support Mrs. Clinton at a luncheon in Long Island, according to journalist Robert Brodsky of the newspaper.NewsdayAt the event, Mr. Powell told attendees that he would vote for Mrs. Clinton because candidate Donald Trump “insults us every day.”
With the above statement, the retired four-star general is the latest in a series of prominent Republicans to cross the “red line” to support Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton or refuse to support Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Mr. Powell has previously criticized billionaire Trump, according to stolen emails published by the WikiLeaks website after his email was hacked. In the emails, Mr. Powell called candidate Trump a “national disgrace.”
Leaked emails also show that Mr. Powell attacked Mrs. Clinton for using personal email while secretary of state.
This is the third time in presidential elections that Mr. Powell has “betrayed” the Republican Party to vote for a Democratic candidate. In 2008 and 2012, Mr. Powell supported Barack Obama to become the US president.
Mr. Powell served as Secretary of State from January 2001 to January 2005 under President George W. Bush. Prior to that, he served in the George H. W. Bush administration as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in the Ronald Reagan administration as national security advisor.
