An Iranian general has threatened to destroy Israel with a devastating attack, leaving the Jewish state with no choice but to flee to the sea.

Specifically, in a speech to the military in the city of Isfahan, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, the second-in-command of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, emphasized: "I want to tell the Prime Minister of the State of Israel that he should learn to swim in the Mediterranean. Because soon there will be nowhere to hide except the open sea."

General Salami went on to say that it doesn't need to be Iran; Israel can be defeated by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah armed group. "Hezbollah alone is enough to defeat them," Salami declared.

Iran provides weapons and funding to Hezbollah, an armed group founded in 1985 in response to Israeli intervention in Lebanon. Hezbollah is believed to possess up to 150,000 missiles and store them throughout Lebanon.

Israel and Hezbollah clashed in 2016, but the conflict ended in a stalemate, which resulted in thousands of rockets being fired at Israeli cities from southern Lebanon.

Both Iran and Hezbollah have gained a foothold in Syria in recent years, supporting the Bashar al-Assad regime against rebel groups.

Israel views this intervention as a threat to its national security and has carried out airstrikes on sites linked to Hezbollah or Iran. Israel recently admitted that since last year it has conducted more than 200 airstrikes against Iranian and Hezbollah targets in Syria.
