On September 21st, the Hanoi City People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to hear the case against defendant Trieu Quang Trinh (born in 1984, residing in Dan Phuong district, Hanoi City), who is being prosecuted for "Murder" and "The crime of..."RobberyThe victim was Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (from Ha Dong district, Hanoi).
According to the indictment of the Hanoi People's Procuracy, in 2014, Trinh became acquainted with Ms. Hoa, a former colleague from the same company.
During their acquaintance, there were no conflicts between them; they occasionally met because they went the same way to work. Due to business losses, Trinh later asked to borrow money from Ms. Hoa.
Initially, Trinh asked to borrow 40 million VND from Ms. Hoa, with an interest rate of 12 million VND per month, and Ms. Hoa agreed. However, upon receiving the money, Trinh was charged the first month's interest, so he only received 28 million VND. Trinh explained that he accepted the high interest rate because he needed the money to pay off his debts.

In July 2019, Ms. Hoa informed Trinh that the interest had reached 37 million VND. In the following months, because Trinh was unable to pay the interest regularly to Ms. Hoa, she threatened him, sent people to call and demand payment, and even physically assaulted him on one occasion, forcing him to pay both the principal and interest, totaling approximately 230 million VND. From then on, Trinh conceived the idea of murdering Ms. Hoa after receiving threatening phone calls.
On the afternoon of March 6, 2020, after arranging to meet Ms. Hoa, Trinh brought a hammer to meet her on Ngo Quyen Street (Xuan La Ward, Ha Dong District). Upon meeting, Trinh pretended to invite Ms. Hoa out and took her to Nguyen Trai flower garden (Ha Dong District) to look for an opportunity to attack her.
Noticing that it was still daylight and many people were passing by, Trinh lied about going to get money and then rode his motorbike around the Ha Dong district, while Ms. Hoa waited on a park bench. Around 7 PM that same day, Trinh returned to the park bench and continued chatting with Ms. Hoa.
At this point, Trinh noticed that there were no people around, so he used a hammer to strike Hoa's head multiple times, causing her to collapse. Seeing that Hoa was still breathing, Trinh strangled her for about 5 minutes until she lost consciousness. Believing Hoa was dead, Trinh removed her necklace and earrings, then carried her to a grassy area by the Nhuệ River, covered her with branches, and left.
Upon returning home, fearing that his act of murdering Ms. Hoa would be discovered, Trinh went back to the scene and used the gasoline he had brought with him to burn Ms. Hoa's body to conceal the crime. On March 9, 2020, Trinh was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Hanoi City Police.
At the trial, the defendant Trinh admitted to the aforementioned crimes. The panel of judges affirmed that the defendant Trinh's criminal act was particularly serious, as he committed the crime with brutality. Simply to avoid repaying his debts, the defendant committed murder and burned the body.dispose of evidenceThe court found that the defendant Trinh was beyond rehabilitation and reform, and therefore decided to permanently remove him from society.
With this verdict, the court sentenced the defendant Trinh to death for two crimes: murder and robbery.
