USD exchange rate today, January 9, 2025: The US dollar continued its upward trend, closing at 109 as the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds reached its highest level in eight and a half months following the tariff report.
Today's USD exchange rate worldwide
The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), closed at 109.03 – up 0.34 points from the trading session on January 8, 2025.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds reached 4.73%, its highest level since April 25, after CNN reported that Trump was considering declaring a national economic emergency to provide a legal basis for a series of general tariffs on other countries.
Investors are hoping that Trump's policies, such as deregulation and tax cuts, will boost economic growth, but there are concerns that this move could cause inflation to accelerate again.
Earlier data, the ADP National Employment Report, showed that private payroll growth in the U.S. slowed significantly in December, from 146,000 the previous month to 122,000. Economists in a Reuters poll had forecast a rise of 140,000.
However, weekly initial jobless claims fell to an 11-month low of 201,000, lower than economists' estimates of 218,000 in a Reuters poll.
The DXY index closed the last trading session at 109.00, after reaching a more than two-year high of 109.54 last week, while the EUR fell 0.2% to 1.0318 USD.
The market is currently pricing in a rate cut of just 39 basis points from the Federal Reserve this year, with the first rate cut likely to occur in June. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said on January 8 that inflation will continue to fall into 2025, allowing the central bank to continue lowering interest rates.
The US dollar held onto its gains following the release of the Fed's minutes from December 17 and 18, which showed policymakers agreeing that inflation is likely to continue slowing this year but also hinting at increased risks of price pressures and the impact of Trump's policies.
Conversely, the British pound fell 0.87% to $1.2364 after dropping to $1.2321, its lowest level since April 22 and the second lowest this year, amid 10-year government bond yields reaching a 16-year high.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose 0.25%, reaching 158.41 and moving closer to the 160 level, a crucial point that could potentially force Japanese authorities to intervene to support the currency.
A government survey showed that Japanese consumer sentiment weakened in December, raising doubts about the Bank of Japan's view that robust household spending would bolster the economy, as well as the justifications behind further interest rate hikes.
