In recent trading sessions in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the fluctuations of the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), rose slightly by 0.08%, reaching 106.90.
The US dollar appreciated against several other currencies after US President-elect Donald Trump pledged to impose new tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico, and China. This tariff policy is believed to be aimed at addressing issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking from Mexico and Canada.
At the same time, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) released the minutes of its latest meeting. These minutes showed that Fed officials had differing views on the extent to which future interest rate cuts were necessary. However, they all agreed that now was not the right time to make specific decisions.
Furthermore, during his campaign, Trump also announced he would impose a 60% import tariff on goods from China. However, according to Burns McKinney, portfolio manager at NFJ Investment Group in Dallas, investors do not seem to be reacting strongly to these changes in tariff policy.
U.S. Treasury yields rose in the last trading session, shortly after President-elect Trump announced new tariffs. Matt Eagan, portfolio manager at Loomis, Sayles & Co., said concerns about tariffs and the possibility of Fed interest rate cuts are putting pressure on financial markets.
Earlier, Trump also announced his selection of billionaire Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary in his cabinet. Bessent is a supporter of tax reforms and deregulation, particularly to boost bank lending and energy production.
Additionally, President Trump announced his selection of Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer from Oregon as Secretary of Labor. He praised Chavez-DeRemer for her tireless efforts in supporting businesses and workers, contributing to the development of the American workforce.
In the bond market, the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds rose 3 basis points, from 4.263% to 4.293%, while the yield on 30-year Treasury bonds increased 1.8 basis points to 4.4647%. The yield on 2-year Treasury bonds, which typically fluctuates with interest rate expectations, remained unchanged at 4.252%.
