Japanese Yen exchange rate today, April 25, 2025: The Japanese Yen (JPY) fell slightly on hopes that the US and China may ease trade tensions.

At the same time, the US dollar (USD) edged up slightly, helping the USD/JPY exchange rate surpass the 143.00 mark and recover somewhat from its recent decline.

However, consumer inflation in Tokyo rose sharply in April, indicating that price pressures are spreading across Japan. This reinforces expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will continue to raise interest rates in the near future.

In contrast, officials at the US Federal Reserve (Fed) are showing a tendency toward cutting interest rates, reducing the likelihood of a sharp rise in the USD and helping to limit the depreciation of the yen.

President Donald Trump said the world's two leading economies have held talks aimed at resolving their trade dispute. A White House official also confirmed that low-level, in-person and telephone discussions had taken place this week.

However, China denies any negotiations, creating conflicting information and making markets more unpredictable. In this context, safe-haven assets like the yen could still receive support if tensions escalate.

Inflation in Tokyo continues to surge. The consumer price index (CPI) in April rose 3.5% year-on-year, compared to 2.9% the previous month. The core CPI, excluding fresh food, also increased 3.4%, the highest level in two years.

Notably, the index excluding both food and fuel rose to 3.1% from 2.2% the previous month. These figures further reinforce the argument that the BoJ may continue to raise interest rates after the previous 50 basis point hike.

Conversely, signals from the Fed leaned toward interest rate cuts. Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicated he would support such a move if current tax levels negatively impacted the labor market. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack even suggested cuts could begin as early as June if appropriate economic data emerged. However, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell had previously been more cautious, stating that clearer data was needed before changing policy.

Despite the positive US economic data released on Thursday, including a 9.2% increase in durable goods orders in March for the third consecutive month, and a sharp 27% increase in transport equipment orders, the prospect of monetary policy easing from the Fed remains dominant and is overshadowing these positive signals.

Furthermore, expectations that Japan will reach a trade agreement with the U.S. are also supporting market sentiment towards the yen. Japanese Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa is expected to hold a second round of trade talks with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent next week. This could lead to positive progress in bilateral relations, contributing to exchange rate stability and supporting the yen in the short term.
