Vietnam U19 will face host nation Indonesia at the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship.
The draw placed Vietnam U19 in a challenging group alongside Indonesia, Timor Leste, and Myanmar, setting the stage for their goal of conquering the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Qualifiers.
The Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) has officially announced the draw results for the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship. The Vietnam U19 team is in Group A, where they will face host nation Indonesia along with Timor Leste and Myanmar. This is considered a group with the potential for many surprises, especially since Indonesia has always been a formidable opponent at youth levels.
Challenges from the tournament brackets
The tournament will take place in Indonesia from June 1st to June 14th, 2026, with the participation of 12 teams, divided into three groups. Being in the same group as the host team means that the Vietnam U19 team must prepare thoroughly both professionally and mentally.
| Table A | Table B | Table C |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesia (Host) | Thailand | Australia |
| Vietnam | Malaysia | Cambodia |
| Timor Leste | Singapore | Philippines |
| Myanmar | Brunei | But |
While Group A features Vietnam and Indonesia, Group B sees a competition between Thailand and Malaysia. Group C is predicted to be advantageous for Australia as they only have to face Cambodia and the Philippines. This tournament plays a crucial role, serving as a key stepping stone before the teams enter the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Qualifiers next year.
Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's personnel dilemma
To prepare for the Southeast Asian campaign, the Vietnam U19 team began assembling on April 29th at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center. Head coach Yutaka Ikeuchi has summoned a preliminary list of 41 players to assess the squad. However, the Japanese strategist is facing a difficult personnel challenge as he cannot field his strongest team from the start.
Many key players are still absent due to commitments with their respective clubs in the professional league and the national second division. Notably, a group of players born in 2008 are facing a demanding schedule, balancing training with preparations for their high school graduation exams. This forces the coaching staff to implement flexible training plans, prioritizing fitness checks and adjusting training intensity so that players who join later can quickly get back into rhythm.
Intensive preparation roadmap
According to the approved plan, after the training camp in Vietnam, the entire team will travel to Japan for a training camp from May 18th to May 26th. There, the Vietnam U19 team is expected to play several friendly matches against quality opponents. This trip is expected to help the players improve their tactical thinking, enhance their physical strength, and finalize the starting lineup.
Despite being drawn into a group with host nation Indonesia, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi remains steadfast. The team's goal is not just to achieve good results at the Southeast Asian Championship, but also to build a stable playing style, helping young players gain valuable match experience for future endeavors in continental competitions.
