Placed in the same group as host nation Indonesia at the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship, the Vietnam U19 team faces a difficult personnel challenge as many key players are busy with their high school graduation exams.

The Vietnam U19 team is facing an immense challenge at the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship as the draw has placed coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team in Group A – alongside host nation Indonesia, Myanmar, and Timor Leste. Not only do they face strong opponents, but the team also has to solve a difficult personnel problem due to conflicting schedules and the academic pressures of the young players.

The group standings and the pressure from host nation Indonesia.

The tournament, taking place from June 1st to 14th this year, is considered a pivotal test for next year's continental campaign. Among the opponents in Group A, Indonesia has emerged as the biggest obstacle. As the host nation and with a policy of utilizing naturalized players of Dutch descent, the Indonesian team is demonstrating superior physique and a modern approach to football.

Furthermore, Myanmar has always been a formidable opponent at the youth level thanks to their tenacious playing style and excellent physical fitness. Timor Leste's progress in youth development also makes Group A more unpredictable than ever. Compared to Group B (Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei) or Group C (Australia, Cambodia, Philippines), the Vietnamese representative's journey is considered the most challenging in the tournament.

The personnel dilemma: Between the football field and the examination room.

Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's biggest challenge right now lies not only in the opponents but also in the squad size. Despite having assembled his team at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center at the end of April with a list of 41 players, the Japanese strategist has yet to field his optimal lineup.

Many key players are currently stuck at their respective clubs competing in the professional league and the national second division. In particular, the players born in 2008 are facing double pressure: maintaining intense professional training while simultaneously focusing on preparing for their high school graduation exams. This forces the coaching staff to implement extremely flexible training plans to ensure both the physical and mental well-being of their players.

Continental preparation strategy and vision

To compensate for any shortcomings in preparation, the U19 Vietnam coaching staff is focusing on assessing physical fitness through rigorous tests. Coach Ikeuchi's philosophy is to use collective strength and tactical discipline as core weapons. Based on the collected data, the coaching staff will adjust the training volume to establish a balance of physical condition before moving on to refining specialized tactics.

An important part of the preparation plan is a training camp in Japan, scheduled to last from May 18th to May 26th. This is a "dress rehearsal" phase for the players to compete against high-quality opponents, thereby adapting to the high-intensity pace of international competition.

Despite being drawn into a tough group, Vietnamese football's vision extends beyond the region. The upcoming challenges in Indonesia are seen as a crucial test to assess the team's strength and build a solid foundation for competing fairly in the 2027 U20 Asian Championship qualifiers.
