Thailand U22 loses Atthapol, calls up Thawatchai for SEA Games 33.
With Atthapol Sangthong injured in Thai League 2, the U22 Thailand team urgently called up Thawatchai Inprakhon from Singha Chiangrai United; Coach Thawatchai still aims for the gold medal.
Just before the 33rd SEA Games, the U22 Thailand team was forced to make personnel changes: Atthapol Sangthong suffered an injury while playing for his club and was unable to participate. Defender Thawatchai Inprakhon (Singha Chiangrai United) was called up as a replacement to prepare for the opening match against East Timor. Despite the last-minute changes, coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul affirmed that the goal remains the gold medal.
The Atthapol vacuum and the emergency decision.
According to information from the team, Atthapol Sangthong suffered an injury during the recent Thai League 2 match between Nakhon Pathom United and Khon Kaen United. His club has provided details of the injury and the expected recovery time. In light of this situation, the U22 Thailand coaching staff immediately called up defender Thawatchai Inprakhon to ensure squad depth for the SEA Games 33.
Thawatchai, currently on the books of Singha Chiangrai United, will immediately join the team to familiarize himself with the tactics and fitness, aiming for readiness for the opening match against East Timor.
Tactical challenges for the defense
Making substitutions in the defensive line right before a tournament always poses a challenge in terms of cohesion. Thawatchai needs to quickly integrate into the system and the surrounding positional relationships, from covering for the ball to organizing transitions. In a short-term competition like the SEA Games, every set piece, every second ball is a decisive detail, especially when the intensity of the matches is high.
However, adding players with the right defensive expertise helps the U22 Thailand team maintain balance in their formation, minimizing the need for forced role changes for other positions. The ability of the new players to adapt in upcoming training sessions will be key to the team's early stabilization.
A message from the coaching bench
In the press conference before the opening match, coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul emphasized the goal of winning the championship and affirmed that the preparation process had been planned long-term:"Our goal, of course, is to win the championship. It's been a long time since we won the SEA Games. This time, as the host nation, we've been preparing the team for months, with numerous training camps: from the Southeast Asian Championship in Indonesia, the Asian Championship qualifiers in Thailand, to friendly matches in China and most recently in India. We've selected the best players from four training camps in Thailand to participate in the 2025 SEA Games."
As someone who won two gold medals as a player (1997 in Indonesia, 1999 in Brunei), Coach Thawatchai has the opportunity to join the group of former Thai players who have achieved glory both as a player and a coach if the U22 Thai team wins this time.
Context of achievement and the weight of the goal
Thailand currently holds the record for 14 gold medals in men's football at the SEA Games; if previous SEAP Games are included, the number rises to 16. Their first victory was at the 1965 SEAP Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After nearly nine years of waiting, their goal for this year's Games on home soil is to win their 17th SEA Games gold medal.
Therefore, despite the unexpected personnel changes, the team's message remains consistent: optimize existing resources, ensure the stability of the competition structure, and maintain the highest competitive standards in every match.
The opening match and the start of the season require a solid performance.
Thailand U22 will face East Timor in their opening match. In a short tournament, a perfect start is not only important for points but also creates positive momentum for the rest of the campaign. The timely presence of Thawatchai, along with the established rhythm built through numerous training sessions, provides a foundation for Thailand U22 to control risks and aim for the highest possible goal.
