U22 Vietnam wins big thanks to 'reversal and substitution'
(Baonghean.vn) - We had a big 4-0 win over U22 East Timor in the first match thanks to the U22 Vietnam coaching staff boldly 'changing wings' and replacing 2 wingers.
Experts all agree that the key to the victory was coach Huu Thang's bold move to the right wing and replacing both wingers to increase pressure on East Timor's defense.
Bold use of people
Although Duy Hau, the left-back, was included by Fox Sport in the squad of the best young Asian players attending the U20 World Cup, not every coach dares to use him. Especially when defender Van Thanh plays very well in this position for both the national team and U22 Vietnam. The player from Thai Binh, born in 1999, is the youngest player in the team but has a rather impressive collection of achievements. This player not only created a miracle with U19 Vietnam at the 2016 U19 Finals, but at the youth level with Hanoi, Hau won the 2016 National U21 and 2017 National U19 championships.

With a height of 1m82, the “youngest” Van Hau is the player with the most ideal physique of U22 Vietnam. This defender is one of the players who “swallowed” the German expert’s training program. Van Hau has a playing style quite similar to Lam Tan, a player from Nghe An who became famous at the 2000 U16 Asian Cup in Da Nang because of his outstanding physical strength and endurance, with a good stretch.
Pushing Van Thanh, a versatile player, to the right wing is not something new. At HAGL, Van Thanh has played and succeeded on the right wing because of his mobility and good adaptability. But using Van Hau is a breakthrough idea, in fact, Van Thanh played quite well with both Van Toan and Lam Ti Phong and Van Hau played well with Hong Duy and excellently with Quang Hai. Remember, this is only the first time Van Hau appeared in the U22 Vietnam shirt, if he continues to play like that, the Thai Binh boy will still have a place in the national team.
Effective substitution.
In fact, Van Toan and Hong Duy played well until they were substituted, and with a little luck, they even scored a goal. But clearly, the field was slippery, the ball was wet, and facing the young players of U22 East Timor, so the U22 Vietnam coaching staff needed to refresh the attack. If Lam Ti Phong is a player with a good appearance, good physical strength, and can play aggressively on the left wing, Quang Hai is a player with a tactical mindset and an annoyingly agile way of dribbling.

Because they are on the same left wing as Hanoi FC, Van Hau and Quang Hai have become a perfect pair, attacking and defending in harmony. Van Hau also provides good support for the triangle of Tuan Anh, Cong Phuong and Quang Hai. The presence of Lam Ti Phong allows Van Thanh to participate in the attack more than before.
If in the first half, Van Toan and Hong Duy were the ones who were capable of holding the ball small with Tuan Anh and Cong Phuong, then in the second half, the new wing was the one who was aggressive, daring to hold the ball and break into the 16.5m area. With good physical strength, Lam Ti Phong and Quang Hai were ready to compete with the young players of East Timor to stretch the opponent's defense. The goals of Cong Phuong and Tuan Anh were all in the intention of Huu Thang and the U22 VN coaching staff. Lam Ti Phong and Quang Hai exhausted the strength and disrupted the playing style of the young players of East Timor by constantly moving.
Speaking at a press conference after the match, coach Kim Shin Hwan of U22 East Timor admitted: "I am temporarily satisfied with this result. In the first half, we played well, but in the second half, because we had many young players, they lost strength and suffered consecutive losses."
When the water receded, the ball went faster. The U22 Vietnam coaching staff made the right decision when they sent in players with better physiques, played quickly, and overwhelmed the away team. According to the Korean coach, he knew that but did not have the personnel to carry it out. "I feel a bit regretful that the rain prevented U22 East Timor from implementing their plan to play offensively against Vietnam. We wanted to play offensively, but that could not happen."
