The UAE is pursuing the purchase of BrahMos missiles and the Akashteer air defense coordination system to build a multi-layered defense network and enhance strategic autonomy.

Preliminary negotiations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India regarding the purchase of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and the Akashteer air defense command system are becoming the focus of international military observers. This is considered one of the most strategically significant defense developments in the Middle East this year.

According to sources from the Indian government, Abu Dhabi and New Delhi are accelerating discussions on the transfer of AI-integrated weapons. While details regarding the contract value, quantity, or delivery timeline have not been officially released, this move demonstrates the UAE's efforts to enhance its defense capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz – a vital shipping lane for global energy exports.

BrahMos: A high-speed, precision attack solution.

Currently, the UAE military is equipped with many modern air defense systems from the US, such as THAAD, Patriot, and ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles. However, in the face of increasingly sophisticated missile and drone threats, Abu Dhabi needs a multi-layered combat system capable of a faster response.

The BrahMos hypersonic missile boasts impressive technical specifications, offering a superior deterrent advantage:

  • Speed:Reaching speeds of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.5 (more than three times the speed of sound), it reduces the enemy's reaction time to just a few minutes.
  • Flight trajectory:Its ability to fly low over the sea and its high maneuverability in the final phase make it difficult even for the most advanced active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems to intercept it.
  • Range:The export version is typically limited to around 290km, in accordance with international regulations on missile technology control.

Akashteer: The AI brain for modern defense grids

Alongside the powerful firepower of the BrahMos, the Akashteer system serves as the "nerve center" in the UAE's new defense strategy. This AI-based command and control platform integrates data from radar, sensors, and communications networks into a unified operational picture.

This system allows for real-time management of operational space and coordination of defensive operations. The combination of BrahMos and Akashteer enables the UAE to effectively counter multiple types of attacks simultaneously, from fighter jets and cruise missiles to massive UAV raids.

Strategy for diversifying arms sources

The UAE's decision to turn to India instead of traditional Western suppliers reflects a trend toward diversifying defense supply sources in the Gulf region. According to expert Siemon Wezeman from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), both the BrahMos and Akashteer systems effectively meet the UAE's specific needs in the current security environment.

From India's perspective, if this deal is successful, it would be a breakthrough, allowing New Delhi to penetrate deeper into the high-end arms market in the Middle East and solidify its position as a reliable exporter of military technology. However, since the BrahMos is a collaborative product between India and Russia, the deal will require approval from Moscow. Experts believe this hurdle is not significant given the close relationship between Russia and the UAE.

Overall, strengthening defense cooperation with India helps the UAE enhance its strategic autonomy. This move does not pose a major concern for the US, as both the UAE and India maintain strong strategic partnerships with Washington, creating a more flexible security network in the region.
