Persian Gulf nations are turning to Ukrainian interceptor UAVs to destroy Shahed drones instead of using expensive anti-aircraft missiles.
Ukrainian-made interceptor drone systems are expanding their operational reach from the Eastern European front lines to the Persian Gulf region. This is seen as a cost-effective solution to destroy Shahed suicide drones, which are putting significant pressure on the traditional air defense systems of Middle Eastern countries.
Small-scale air defense and the cost problem.
Ukraine not only sent interceptor UAV systems to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Jordan, but also deployed approximately 228 specialists to assist with maintenance. President Zelensky asserted that Ukraine now possesses the world's most extensive combat experience in dealing with large-scale Shahed UAV attacks.
The emergence of Strila-type interceptor UAVs has solved an economic problem for defense alliances in the region. Previously, the US Navy frequently had to use expensive SM-6 missiles, costing millions of dollars, to shoot down inexpensive targets. The expenditure of costly interceptor missiles with limited production to counter swarms of UAVs put the US and its allies' defense systems on high alert regarding their supply reserves.
Cooperation and exchange of defense technology
The experience gained from combating the Shahed-136 in the Ukrainian battlefield is becoming a valuable export commodity. Arab monarchies have made dozens of offers to acquire this technological know-how. Notably, Ukraine is in discussions with Qatar about acquiring 12 used Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets in exchange for anti-UAV systems.
This shift shows that Ukraine, once a country lacking air defense systems, is gradually becoming an exporter of unmanned combat technology. The deployment of domestically produced interceptor UAVs not only helps protect energy infrastructure but also becomes a crucial military-diplomatic tool for Kyiv in its efforts to acquire more modern weapons such as Patriot missiles or next-generation fighter jets.
