Earlier, the Axios news portal, citing sources, reported that Zelenskiy had urged US senators, who recently visited Kyiv, not to wait for escalation before imposing sanctions on Russia, but to implement restrictive measures now.
In an interview with the Washington Post, President Zelenskiy said that Russia has abundant reserves and therefore can withstand sanctions.
“Once you impose even harsh sanctions, the Russian Federation will look at you and say, ‘Look, we can handle this.’ I think that’s wrong. I support imposing sanctions now.”
Russia has repeatedly rejected accusations from the West and Ukraine that Moscow is engaging in "aggressive actions." Russia maintains that it does not threaten anyone and has no intention of attacking anyone, and that claims of "Russian aggression" are being used as a pretext for deploying more NATO military equipment near its borders. The Russian Foreign Ministry previously noted that Western rhetoric about "Russian aggression" and the opportunity for Kyiv to defend itself is absurd and dangerous.
Meanwhile, Ukraine and Western countries have recently expressed concern over allegations that Russia is intensifying "aggressive actions" near the Ukrainian border. Russian President's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is moving troops within its own territory at its own discretion. According to Peskov, this does not threaten anyone and does not concern anyone.
