The M1 Abrams battle tanks that the US pledged to provide aid to Kiev will likely not be present in Ukraine in 2023.

According to Defense News, last weekend, US Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said that the US military is still discussing options for transferring M1 Abrams battle tanks to Kiev. However, these tanks may not appear on the front lines in 2023, which is disappointing news for the Ukrainian armed forces.

"We are still looking at the fastest way to get tanks to Ukraine, but this is not a matter of weeks or two months. We have options now that are under two years or at least a year and a half," Ms. Wormuth said.

According to the US Army Secretary, it is difficult to conclude whether Abrams tanks can reach Ukraine by the end of 2023. "Logistics plans are still being calculated, many details have not been worked out," Ms. Wormuth added.

Several US military officials revealed that options related to the supply of Abrams tanks will be presented to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who will then report to President Joe Biden to make a final decision.

Modern Western tanks could bolster Ukraine’s defenses against Russia’s spring offensive, military experts say, but given the current situation, it’s unlikely that US Abrams tanks will reach the frontline before then.
