Ukraine will have to pay $185 billion in debt after the conflict
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister believes that after the conflict with Russia, Ukraine will have to pay $185 billion in foreign debt, requiring investment in the economy and restoring production.

According to TASS on July 16, former Prime Minister of Ukraine (term 2010-2014) Mykola Azarov said in an interview with TASS that in the process of recovering the country after the conflict, Ukraine will have to pay 185 billion USD in foreign debt, requiring investment in the economy and restoring production.
"Who should be involved in the recovery process? Of course, Ukraine itself and the Ukrainian people. The country needs to pay off huge debts - $ 185 billion. But how can it be paid off if the economy is not working? This means that Ukraine needs to boost its economy. And to boost it, Ukraine needs to invest in this economy. But where can Ukraine get the money if it needs to pay off debts? That is, first of all, we need to solve the debt problem. Freeze the debt for at least 30 years and organize production so that there is some money needed for investing in infrastructure, restoring businesses," the former prime minister of Ukraine analyzed.
At the same time, Mr. Azarov noted that there are people in Ukraine who are interested in restoring the country. “It is difficult to even talk about the restoration process now, but I hope that I know the Ukrainian people well, I know the people with whom I have worked for many years. There are many capable, talented people who will be interested in restoring our country,” he said.
As of May 31, Ukraine's state debt and state-guaranteed debt amounted to 7.51 trillion hryvnia, or $180.97 billion, according to the Ukrainian newspaper "Ekonomicheskaya Pravda" citing data from the country's Ministry of Finance. In May 2025, the debt increased by 34.88 billion hryvnia, or nearly $1 billion.
