'Un-Break My Heart' - Disillusioned diva
In early December 1996, the US Billboard charts witnessed the birth of a global hit, "Un-Break My Heart." This song held the number one position for 11 weeks, from December 1996 to February 1997, before being dethroned by "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls.
Un-Break My Heart quickly became the most successful song in singer Toni Braxton's career. However, few people know that Toni didn't like the song at all before that.
The hit song wasn't meant for Braxton.
Diane Warren is a prolific songwriter, or rather, a hit-maker, specializing in creating massive hit songs. In Billboard's chart history, no songwriter has ever had seven songs top the charts. That's not even counting the countless songs in the Top 10 and Top 100.
The number of artists who have recorded Warren's songs is countless, from Roberta Flack and Eric Clapton to Elton John and Barbra Streisand… From veterans like Aerosmith, Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, and Gloria Estefan to contemporary artists such as Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey, and Faith Hill… Warren's hit songs generate enormous profits. Just Aerosmith's song "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" alone brought Warren tens of millions of dollars in royalties.

But no song has brought Warren the same level of success as "Un-Break My Heart."
Written in 1995, Un-Break My Heart is a rather melancholic love song, full of lamentations, expressing the feelings of a woman longing for her former lover to return.
Warren composed this song based on the title. "Don't Break My Heart," an exclamation that's been seen many times before; in 1976, singer Elton John had a hit song titled "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and countless other famous singers have songs with similar content. "But no one had ever used 'Un-Break My Heart' before. I thought about it for a long time, found it very interesting, and one fine day in 1995, I decided to compose based on that idea," Warren recalled.
Composed on the piano in Warren's Los Angeles studio, "Un-break My Heart" has the melody of a sad Spanish song, beginning with the chorus, "Don't break my heart, just say you'll love me again..." For four consecutive days, Warren immersed herself in composing, finishing the chorus before writing the opening and then the lyrics. Around her, a feeling of loneliness surrounds her; her six-year relationship ended two years prior, and now Warren only has her kitten for companionship.
Warren's life was also sad and lonely. Despite being considered a formidable force, Warren lived a rather reclusive life. And that's why she preferred to choose her friends and collaborators only after observing and getting to know them well.
And so, the first person Warren thought of giving the song to after he finished writing it was Celine Dion.
Cannot be a diva
Celine Dion was already a diva at that time. Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey were also at the same time. And Toni Braxton? According to mogul Clive Davis, who had a knack for creating divas, Toni was on the verge of success.
But Toni is a spoiled "little diva." She has a talented voice. Even her self-titled debut album, released in 1993, was considered a new goldmine in American music. The album sold 10 million copies and earned Braxton three Grammy Awards. With such a start, Toni Braxton believed she would be the next diva.
Therefore, later on, almost all stories about Un-Break My Heart said that the song was initially "given" to Toni Braxton, but she stubbornly refused to sing it because it was too sad and she herself didn't like tearful, sentimental songs at all.
That's not actually the case. Around the same time in 1995, Warren sent two songs to both Celine Dion and Toni Braxton. Celine's was "Un-Break My Heart," while Toni Braxton's was "Because You Loved Me." Toni Braxton personally loved "Because You Loved Me," but her producer felt the song didn't fit the spirit of her upcoming second album.
And so a secret agreement was made: Celine Dion sang "Because You Loved Me," and Toni sang the other. The pressure immediately mounted when, in February 1996, Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" climbed to number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for six weeks. The burden of the "diva title" made Toni Braxton feel suffocated, thinking that the song should have been hers.
Toni Braxton's difficult personality frustrates many, especially since she has a formidable team behind her, from mogul Clive Davis to top producers like BabyFace and LAReid. Yet, Toni remains oblivious, believing that everything takes time, and insisting on rushing to the top.
Although somewhat displeased, Clive Davis, being a seasoned veteran in the recording industry, still reassured and comforted Toni Braxton, telling her that the pinnacle of her career awaited her with Un-Break My Heart.
Eventually, Toni entered the recording studio, leaving all her arrogance and tantrums behind. A masterpiece was born in December 1996, spending 11 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and selling 20 million copies worldwide. Not to mention a flurry of Grammys and numerous other top-ranking titles in various countries.
Un-Break My Heart became the song of the decade and propelled Toni Braxton to the peak of her career. But at that height, looking down, Toni Braxton thought that she alone was enough, and she didn't need anyone else.
And from this point on, Toni Braxton's path to diva status crumbled.
The success of "Un-Break My Heart" opened a path for Toni Braxton, a path leading to… the court. All because of money. Toni claims she wasn't being paid fairly. It's worth remembering that the songwriter, Diane Warren, earned $1.2 million in royalties in the US alone within 18 months, not including an additional $700,000 from radio and television broadcasts. The additional earnings outside the US amounted to nearly $3 million…
Toni Braxton felt she wasn't receiving fair compensation and that LaFace Records was profiting unfairly. She broke her contract with the record label, leading to a legal battle. The lengthy legal battles left Toni Braxton without support to further her music career, and ironically, the lawsuits ultimately led to her bankruptcy. She had to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, meaning she had to sell her house and even her Grammy awards.
And that's why a singer with so much potential like Toni Braxton couldn't reach diva status. Reputable producers didn't want to work with Toni Braxton anymore, she didn't have hit songs, she wasted a long time dealing with lawsuits, and the door to diva status remained closed to her forever.
In 2010, Toni Braxton filed for bankruptcy again due to debts totaling $50 million. This was largely due to canceled shows and excessive partying.
Many people regret Toni Braxton's musical career, believing that with "Un-Break My Heart," she could have achieved much more. However, her personality, coupled with a lack of timely guidance, led to her downfall. In 2014, Toni Braxton released her autobiography, "Un-Break My Heart," in which she recounts her difficult childhood and the pitfalls she faced at the peak of her career. The autobiography sold very well and became so popular that it is now being adapted into a television series.
