Vardy scored twice, Leicester moved closer to the championship

April 10, 2016 23:55

Thanks to the brilliance of the 29-year-old striker, coach Claudio Ranieri's team won 2-0 in round 33 of the English Premier League on April 10.

The result puts Leicester 10 points clear of Tottenham before the London club host Man Utd at White Hart Lane. It was Leicester's fifth consecutive win and the script was not much different from previous games, although this time they won 2-0 rather than 1-0.

Sunderland were in good form, forcing Leicester to look like a normal English team with their clumsy tackles and simple crosses and headers. The most dangerous chance of the first half came in the second minute of added time when Fabio Borini's shot deflected off Wes Morgan and was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, the most notable situation in the first half was Van Aanholt's dribble in the 37th minute. Center back Robert Huth, while tackling to clear the ball, let the ball touch his hand. This situation was reminiscent of the penalties that were denied by Crystal Palace or Southampton when facing Leicester in recent matches. Many people think that Leicester are being favored by the referees.

The stalemate only ended thanks to Danny Drinkwater's brilliant play in the 66th minute. The midfielder, who had just been called up to the England squad, sent a brilliant long pass from his own half for Jamie Vardy to run up, use his speed to get past Younes Kaboul and curl the ball into the Sunderland net.

This was Vardy's first goal in the Premier League since losing 1-2 to Arsenal on February 14. It set the stage for Leicester to continue their usual counter-attacking style. In the following minutes, Leonardo Ulloa and Wes Morgan had chances to double the lead but both missed. In the fifth minute of injury time of the second half, from a pass from Demarai Gray, Vardy accelerated strongly to eliminate Van Aanholt, dribbled past Mannone and gently put the ball into the home team's net for the second time.

Sunderland's best chance of the second half came from Jack Rodwell's close-range tap-in in the 82nd minute. The former Man City midfielder was in a good position but missed the ball incredibly. Defeated at home by Leicester, Sunderland remain in 18th place, four points behind safety Norwich but with a game in hand.

For Leicester, this victory helped them take a big step towards the championship. Before round 33, former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho predicted that if the "Foxes" won and Tottenham lost to Man Utd, Leicester would win the championship this season. The two goals in this match also helped Vardy close in on Harry Kane in the race for the top scorer title (21 goals compared to 22 goals).
