In this rice planting season, to help each other plant rice, some households formed labor exchange groups, while the majority of farmers had to hire people to plant the rice in time for the season. Photo: Huy Thu

During this time, the communes of Dong Van, Minh Tien, etc., welcome hundreds of rice planters from all over the district and beyond. They are mostly middle-aged women who take advantage of their free time during the agricultural off-season to work as hired rice planters to earn extra income. Photo: Huy Thu

After agreeing on the price and the number of workers, the transplanters follow the owner to the fields to carry seedlings for planting. In localities where planting is organized simultaneously, every household hires transplanters, and although there are many transplanters from various places, some households still haven't found transplanters even after uprooting their seedlings. A woman in Dong Van commune said that they expected warm weather after the planting season, but instead it was colder than usual. However, the farmers still proceeded with planting because the seedlings were already strong. On the morning of February 10th, the sun came out, but planting in the cold rain for the previous few days had been quite difficult. Photo: Huy Thu

Most rice planters try to go to work early and come back late to get their full day's wages. Some women only find rice fields to plant after going to the market. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, from Thanh Phong commune, who works as a hired rice planter in Dong Van commune (Thanh Chuong district), said: "For almost a week now, I've been going with my villagers to work as hired rice planters. All the women in the neighborhood are working as hired rice planters, so it's quite fun." (Photo: Huy Thu)

Nowadays, rice transplanters are often provided with lunch at the landowner's house. Halfway through the transplanting session, the women usually stop to eat snacks and take a break in the field. Some groups of hired transplanters even bring their own food and drinks to eat in the middle of the field. Photo: Huy Thu

Many people who work as hired rice planters have to take on additional tasks such as pulling up seedlings, applying fertilizer, and transporting seedlings to the field... Especially when planting hastily, with un-plowed fields and seedlings not yet pulled up, it becomes very difficult. Photo: Huy Thu

A woman from Xuan Duong commune (Thanh Chuong district) who works as a hired rice planter in Minh Tien commune shared: "Working as a hired rice planter is like planting for myself; the homeowner wants me to plant however they want. To ensure I pay the homeowner a day's wages, I only answer the phone after I've finished planting and come ashore." (Photo: Huy Thu)

A woman from Nam Dan district who works as a hired rice planter in Minh Tien commune (Thanh Chuong district) said: "Each day, in addition to lunch, I get paid 350,000 VND by the landowner. If I work as a hired planter for a week, I can earn a few million VND." (Photo: Huy Thu)

After a hard and tiring day of working in the rice fields, the female rice planters would gather to eat snacks and chat happily before heading home. Once they finished planting rice for one family, they would be called upon to work for another. Rice planters have plenty of work after the Lunar New Year. Photo: Huy Thu
