Why are high school students not allowed to take entrance exams for police colleges and vocational schools?

The Ministry of Public Security prioritizes those who have voluntarily served in the People's Public Security Force to be admitted to police colleges and vocational schools.

Compared to 2016, the number of university admissions for police academies this year has decreased by more than 50% (compared to 3,200 in 2016) and is significantly lower than in previous years.

Furthermore, admission to police academies (college and vocational levels) is only for officers who have completed their mandatory service in the People's Public Security Force.

To better understand these issues, Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Muoi, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Politics of the People's Police (Ministry of Public Security), stated:

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Muoi:It is true that this year, the enrollment quota for police academies has decreased compared to 2016 and significantly compared to previous years. Those admitted to police academies are officially recruited and assigned to work within the police force.

The reason for the unexpected sharp decrease in enrollment quotas for police academies this year is that the Ministry of Public Security is implementing the Party and State's policy on streamlining personnel, so the number of personnel in the People's Public Security Force is not being increased.

In 2017, the total enrollment quota for police academies was 1,500 nationwide. However, the police colleges and vocational schools did not recruit high school students; instead, they only recruited former police officers who had completed their mandatory service. This was intended to allow those who had completed their mandatory service to be re-employed in police units through an entrance examination.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Muoi:Currently, the People's Public Security Force has a significant number of young people performing military service, such as riot police and prison guards. The majority of these individuals aspire to become professional officers within the People's Public Security Force. Therefore, to provide opportunities for those who have completed their service to continue working in the police force, policies are needed to attract them through competitive examinations at police academies.

PV:So, what will the entrance exam process be like for police academies for those who have completed their police service, sir?

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Muoi:All candidates applying to police universities, as well as those who have completed their military service, must take the entrance exam according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training. Accordingly, all candidates must register for the National High School Graduation Examination. Afterward, each police university will select candidates based on their chosen subject combinations. For example, some police universities might select candidates based on the combination of Mathematics, Literature, and English, while the Firefighting University might select candidates based on Mathematics and two subjects from the Natural Sciences combination (Physics and Chemistry).

PV:Could you please explain how the priority given to candidates who have served in the People's Public Security Force is implemented in the recruitment process?

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Muoi:The Ministry of Public Security has agreed to prioritize police officers who have completed their mandatory service in the People's Public Security Force by adding 2 points to their scores when applying to police colleges and vocational schools.
