In Phalodi city, Rajasthan state, temperatures soared to 51 degrees Celsius - the highest ever recorded in the country, and the third highest in Earth's history.

So far, hundreds of people have died due to the heat wave across the country. Drought has also devastated crops, forcing tens of thousands of farmers to leave their homeland to seek a living in cities. Many other farmers have committed suicide.

According to the Indian Express, in the past week alone, 36 farmers in the drought-hit Marathwada region have committed suicide. In the past four and a half months, the total number of suicides has reached 454.
