Vietnam is preparing for its first gender reassignment surgery.
According to Dr. Mai Bá Tiến Dũng, Director of Bình Dân Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the hospital is preparing the procedures for the first gender reassignment surgery in Vietnam.
According to information provided by the hospital, on March 8th, patient NAV (born in 1992, residing in Nha Trang) visited Binh Dan Hospital for examination and expressed her intention to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
V.'s case is quite unusual because this patient has a girl's name, grew up with a well-developed physique and breasts like a girl, but his genitals are... half male, half female. However, in his mind, V. identifies himself as a real man. Therefore, V. feels quite uncomfortable and self-conscious because he has to use bandages to compress his chest.

After careful consideration, V. and his parents decided to go to Ho Chi Minh City for gender reassignment surgery to become a full man. His family also supported and were ready to accept V.'s new gender. V.'s parents persuaded the doctors to consider proceeding with the surgery so that V. could live according to his desired gender.
Dr. Dung said: "The patient's chromosome test results showed 46xx (female). However, a CT scan revealed that the patient had both a right testicle, prostate gland, and uterus (true hermaphroditism). This case was very favorable for male reconstruction because the patient already had two scrotums; only the artificial testicles needed to be implanted."
Therefore, if the surgery to become male is successful, this would officially be the first gender reassignment surgery in Vietnam. After the surgery, the patient will become a completely new person, not only in gender but also in identity.

"Although gender reassignment surgery is legally permitted, it has long been impossible to perform due to a lack of implementing regulations. To proceed with this surgery, we are awaiting approval from relevant departments," Dr. Dung shared.
According to Dr. Dung, the hospital's board of directors and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will hold a meeting next week to provide official information. After obtaining approval from the authorities, the hospital will send a delegation to patient V.'s locality to conduct an investigation. The procedures will be carried out meticulously to help the patient avoid complications after surgery, such as having to change their name or gender on official documents.
