Vietnam wins historic gold medal at the World Karatedo Championships.
By defeating the Canadian fighter in the final, Nguyen Thi Ngoan won the gold medal in the 61kg category at the K1 World Championships in Leipzig, Germany.
This is the best achievement that Vietnamese karatedo has ever had in the kumite (sparring) event at a world-level competition.

Ninety-eight fighters competed in the women's 61 kg category. Nguyen Thi Ngoan received a bye in the first round. She subsequently defeated Kandemir Zehra (Turkey) 1-0, Kornfeld Noemie (Switzerland) 2-0, Orbon Joane (USA) 3-0, and Heurtault Leila (France) 1-0.
In the semi-finals, the Vietnamese fighter surprisingly defeated Austrian fighter and reigning world champion Buchinger Alisa 2-0. In the final, Ngoan continued his impressive performance, defeating Jumaa Haya of Canada to claim the title.
The K1 World Championships in Leipzig, Germany, took place from September 8th to 10th, featuring 1384 athletes from 87 countries. This tournament is part of the World Karate Federation (WKF) ranking system for the 2020 Olympics.

In April 2017, competing in the K1 UAE leg of the tournament, Nguyen Thi Ngoan won a bronze medal in the women's 61kg category. She is a very promising athlete for Vietnamese women's karate and is being groomed to compete for medals at the 2018 Asian Games and qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
At the recent SEA Games 29 in Malaysia, Ngoan did not make it to the final of the 61kg category.
