Vietnam won historic gold medal at World Karatedo Championship

Defeating the Canadian boxer in the final, Nguyen Thi Ngoan won the gold medal in the 61kg category at the K1 world tournament in Leipzig, Germany.

This is the best achievement that Vietnamese karate has achieved in the kumite (combat) category at a world-level tournament.

There were 98 boxers competing in the women's 61 kg category. Nguyen Thi Ngoan was exempted from the first round. She then defeated Kandemir Zehra (Turkey) 1-0, Kornfeld Noemie (Switzerland) 2-0, Orbon Joane (USA) 3-0, Heurtault Leila (France) 1-0.

In the semi-finals, the Vietnamese boxer surprisingly defeated the Austrian boxer, the reigning world champion Buchinger Alisa 2-0. In the final, Ngoan continued his impressive performance, defeating Jumaa Haya of Canada to take the title.

The K1 World Championship in Leipzig, Germany took place from September 8 to September 10, with the participation of 1,384 athletes from 87 countries. This is a tournament in the scoring system for the 2020 Olympics of the World Karate Federation (WKF).

In April 2017, when competing in the K1 tournament in the UAE, Nguyen Thi Ngoan won a bronze medal in the women's 61kg category. She is a very promising athlete of Vietnamese women's karate and is expected to compete for medals at the 2018 Asian Games and compete for a ticket to the 2020 Olympics.

At the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia, Ngoan failed to reach the finals of the 61kg category.
