Matrix Pearls
While collecting pearls from clams in Chập Chạ Lake, many residents of Gia Tịnh village (Sơn Trạch commune, Bố Trạch district, Quảng Bình province) have previously discovered pearls. However, a pearl weighing 100 grams, shaped like a meditating Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, like the one found by Mr. Bình and Ms. Cúc, is something they had never seen before.
Strange occurrences at the "oyster breeding ground"
The good fortune of Mr. Tran Duc Binh and Ms. Nguyen Thi Cuc became the talk of the town among the people of Gia Tinh village and the surrounding area. Indeed, it is rare to have the opportunity to admire such a large and uniquely shaped natural pearl. But for Mr. Tran Xuan Tu, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Son Trach commune and a resident of Gia Tinh village, this unusual event is entirely explainable.
Sharing with reporters, Mr. Tu said: "Chap Cha Lake has a large population of oysters. For the local people, this lake, with a surface area of just over 1 hectare and a shallow mud bottom, is truly an 'oyster treasure trove'." Regarding the reason why oysters naturally living in the lake produce pearls, Mr. Tu explained that it's possible the lakebed contains many reddish-brown ferralite rocks. The natural erosion of the rocks in the water, combined with the oysters' habits, has led to the accumulation of pearls over time.
Mr. Tran Thong, the contractor who raises fish in this lake, revealed that Chập Chạ Lake is actually an irrigation lake created by the villagers. Initially, it was built to dam the Chập Chạ stream, accumulating water for irrigating rice fields in the village. What Mr. Thong finds strange is that while there are many lakes in the surrounding area (even natural lakes with clean water and thick mud), mussels thrive there, in Chập Chạ Lake, where Mr. Thong has never raised mussels, the number of mussels is extremely high. So much so that the lake contractor doesn't hesitate to allow villagers to go down to the lake to catch mussels for daily consumption. This also explains why many people have discovered mussels containing pearls.
According to villagers, the number of small pearls "harvested" from the clams in Chập Chạ Lake is countless. However, before Mr. Bình and Ms. Cúc, the most valuable pearl belonged to Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Hùng (from Gia Tịnh village). A while ago, Mr. Hùng caught clams from Chập Chạ Lake to eat as a snack. When he opened the clams, he discovered a pale purplish-pink pearl. This pearl weighed approximately 100 grams. However, at the time, this didn't cause much of a stir because the pearl only resembled a small cauliflower. Speaking with reporters, Mr. Bình said that someone had once offered nearly 10 million dong for the pearl. But wanting to keep it as a memento, he refused.
"A blessing from heaven" for the poor couple.

| Chập Chạ Lake - a pearl oyster "treasure trove" where many rare and precious pearls have been discovered. |
The "pearl-rich" area of Chập Chạ Lake only truly became famous after Mr. Bình and Ms. Cúc discovered a special pearl shaped like a meditating Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
According to Ms. Cúc, her husband caught a large clam weighing about 0.5kg on September 11th. After soaking the clam for a day to let it release its impurities, Mr. Bình prepared it for cooking and discovered a large pearl. After cleaning it and examining it, he was extremely surprised by the pearl's exceptionally unique "natural" shape.
News of Mr. Binh and Ms. Cuc owning the precious gem quickly spread. On September 12th alone, hundreds of people visited the family, asking to see the valuable gem. Many asserted that this gem, shaped like the Bodhisattva Guanyin, was a rare and auspicious sign. They believed that Mr. Binh and Ms. Cuc's family were kind, virtuous, and benevolent, which is why they were "gifted by heaven."
While not overly concerned with spiritual matters, Mr. Binh and Ms. Cuc still cherished the precious gem. Upon observation, we noticed that this gem was quite similar in color to Mr. Hung's, also a pale purplish-pink. The gem was approximately 4cm tall.
The information Mr. Binh and Ms. Cuc provided to the reporter was quite unusual: on September 12th, a stranger approached them and offered 4 million dong to buy the precious pearl. However, Mr. Binh resolutely refused. Just one day later, the stranger reappeared and raised the price to 10 million dong. Given Mr. Binh and Ms. Cuc's circumstances, 10 million dong was a considerable sum. Ms. Cuc hesitated but ultimately decided to refuse.
Sharing with the writer, Ms. Cúc confided: “With 10 million dong, I could buy more furniture and renovate our dilapidated house. But I think such a rare pearl is a good omen for my family. That's why I want to keep it as a memento.” Hopefully, this decision will bring much luck to this poor couple from Quảng province.
