Vo Hoang Yen: 'I want to get married but I'm afraid of having children'

At 30, the model says she's still living a carefree life, is financially independent, and isn't ready to be tied down by having children.

- Nearly two years have passed since you left the catwalk to become a DJ. How has your income changed?

- The DJ profession offers a fairly high and stable income, especially if you're willing to work hard. However, I'm not overly concerned with the money, so I only do shows in moderation. I've noticed that DJs who play music every night, sometimes at two or three nightclubs, tend to lose their creativity, and their music lacks soul. On average, I only take about 3-4 shows a month, dedicating the rest of my time to listening to music and honing my skills. Additionally, I also do a few fashion shows a year to satisfy my passion for the profession and maintain relationships with designers I admire.

Being a celebrity and performing infrequently, of course my fees are more favorable. In addition, I have other sources of income such as renting out properties and training models, so my finances are stable. DJing fulfills my passion for art. I'm someone who always wants change and novelty, and my thinking is quite unconventional. For example,The period when I was criticized for being too thin was when I felt most satisfied with my body, because I believe that models should be thin to be beautiful.

- How have the controversies surrounding her past personal life affected Hoang Yen as she is now?

ButWhen I first entered showbiz, it's true that I used to party, hang out, and dance with friends. I was young then, and I achieved success too early; in 2008 alone, I won two awards.First runner-up in Miss Universe Vietnam and winner of the Supermodel Gold Award. However, ironically, after I stopped partying, people started spreading rumors that I used crystal meth. Then came the love scandals with two men who had nothing to do with my life.

In the past, I was extremely hot-tempered, even banging on the table and yelling at the police during arguments.Regarding my car accident, I also once slapped someone who had wronged me as a warning.Looking back, I realize how rebellious I was. Later, I became less arrogant because I was afraid of upsetting my mother and making her cry. Now, if I have nothing to do, I like to stay home, grow vegetables, cook, and keep company with my dog, who has been by my side for 11 years.I live a very simple life; I've gotten rid of almost all my designer clothes now, I wear whatever anyone sponsors me (laughs). I save the money I earn to invest in the future.

- During the time you faced a lot of controversy, how did your family react?

- My parents are business people who don't like or want their children involved in the arts. I was guided towards a good education, a job, and then marriage. My two older sisters are both masters, but I'm the only one causing my family worry because I don't seem to have a stable life. Before, my parents strongly opposed me becoming a model because they feared I'd get involved in scandals with wealthy men. When I insisted, my mother gave in but still warned me: "If you have any difficulties, come home and I'll take care of you. Absolutely do not do anything wrong for money."

When I temporarily put my modeling career on hold, my family hadn't even had time to rejoice before they were shocked to hear that I had switched to being a DJ. My parents couldn't understand why I always chose such complicated and tempting environments to work in (laughs).

- What do you do to build trust with your family?

- TI have my own rules when working as a DJ, such as not drinking alcohol offered by guests, and not talking directly to guests. Anyone requesting music must go through security to get it to me.

My family is well-off, but I never rely on my parents; I manage everything myself. Many years ago, I bought my own house because my job requires me to leave early and come home late, so my parents have to stay up late waiting for me. If I'm short on money, I borrow from my parents, but I don't ask them for it, because asking for money means I'm not independent yet. Now, my parents no longer complain about my job; they just urge me to get married soon.

- At 30, what are your plans for marriage?

- I promised myself I would think about getting married when I turned 30. However, at this age, I still feel very young and work-obsessed. I still love and want to get married, but the thought of having children scares me. I don't think I have the maturity, patience, and tolerance to be a mother. My mother often scolds me for this.

I've been in relationships before, but I never considered having children with any of them. That's why many of my relationships didn't have happy endings. Many women are born to be wives and mothers; they fulfill those roles naturally. Perhaps I'm not one of them. - With Vietnam's Next Top Model 2017, you received a lot of praise for your comeback. How do you feel about that?

For the past few years, I've limited my performances to avoid my image becoming monotonous in the eyes of the audience.But deep down, I still want to have the opportunity to prove my abilities and my love for the profession in one way or another.During my time at home, I searched for a lot of materials about music.fashion.I've been quietly watching videos of international fashion weeks to see what the catwalk trends are this season. The only thing that worries me is that the audience often compares me to the host.Truong Ngoc Anh.Actually, Ms. AnhHe is a very dedicated and intelligent person. I'm straightforward; if someone I don't admire sits in a position of authority, I won't accept it.I understand that her infrequent participation in challenges is due to the filming schedule. We often have to work 24 hours straight. Both Nam Trung and I are unmarried, so we can be together throughout, but Ánh is busy with her children.

- What do you say about the images of Next Top models cursing and fighting?

- I can understand because I've been through something similar. Many years ago, I used to...I travel abroad for performances with colleagues and we rent apartments together. We also divide up the tasks of cleaning, cooking, and taking out the trash, just like in the Next Top Model house. I get very annoyed and don't hesitate to raise my voice when models are messy or call me all night, keeping me awake.Try locking eleven normal girls in a house, cutting off all contact with the outside world for a month, and see if they don't argue with each other.

After that tumultuous night, the contestants still cooperated normally in the challenges the following day. I observed very carefully and was surprised to see that they didn't seem to have just fought, even when paired with someone they disliked. I appreciate their professionalism and their ability to prioritize work over personal feelings. And after receiving feedback from the audience, I believe the contestants knew what to do.

- What are your impressions of the younger generation of models?

- To be honest, I find the catwalks of the models too weak and unattractive; they lack energy. To be a vedette, your walk must be graceful, your face must be expressive, and you must captivate the audience. When I perform, if audience members open their phones to take pictures, I get very annoyed, wondering if it's because my walk is bad. You need to have that kind of professional self-respect to avoid falling behind.

Models who walk the runway at international fashion weeks aren't necessarily outstanding. Because if they were truly talented, they would have been retained by foreign companies like Bao Hoa and Xuan Lan.I'm also training a model to compete in a beauty pageant. I asked her why she was competing when her face was more suited to modeling. She said that a beauty queen's title always has more influence than a model's. I think that viewpoint is true, but not entirely accurate. I was both a runner-up in a beauty pageant and a supermodel, but I'm still remembered more for my role as a model. Later on, nobody called me "Runner-up Hoang Yen" anymore.
