Trump's wife prepares dress for her husband's inauguration

Ralph Lauren is said to be the fashion brand that designed the dress for Mrs. Melania Trump at her husband's presidential inauguration this weekend.

According to Women's Wear Daily, the future first lady chose Ralph Lauren over a list of several other luxury brands to design a dress and a pair of pants.

With several formal events taking place this week before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, Melania may wear a Ralph Lauren dress to a family dinner with 1,500 guests on the evening of January 19 in Washington.

On election night, November 8, 2016, Melania also appeared on stage with her extended family in an elegant white jumpsuit made from Italian silk by the same brand. The outfit cost nearly $4,000.

Melania's choice of Ralph Lauren is surprising, as the designer is a favorite of many Democratic first ladies. Michelle Obama also wore the brand during her state visit to the UK in 2011.

During the US presidential election, Lauren was also a supporter of Hillary Clinton and even designed all the suits that the Democratic candidate wore at the live debates with Trump and many other outfits throughout the campaign.

While Ralph Lauren doesn’t seem to be taking politics too seriously in fashion, in November French designer Sophie Theallet publicly criticized Trump and called for a boycott of Melania. Other brands like Phillip Lim, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs have also announced that they will not design for the billionaire’s wife.

However, Tommy Hilfiger believes that designers should maintain a neutral stance and not promote political issues when serving customers.

"I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and any designer would be proud to design for her," he said.

Designer Jason Wu was honored to be chosen by Mrs. Michelle Obama twice when he appeared at her husband's post-inauguration balls in 2009 and 2013.
