Ms. Ly Thuy Huong, the former mother-in-law of model Thai Thien Phuong, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for concealing her son. The judge stated that this act demonstrated "disregard for the law".

Latest developments in the shocking Hong Kong case.

In a court hearing on October 28, a Hong Kong court sentenced 66-year-old Li Rui-Hsiang, the former mother-in-law of model Cai Tianfeng, to 18 months in prison for obstructing public officials. She was convicted of deliberately concealing the whereabouts of her son, Kwong Kung-Chi, the main suspect in the murder, after he had been wanted by the police.

Judge Tran Quang Tri stated that Ms. Ly's actions constituted "blindly spoiling her children" and demonstrated "disregard for the law." According to the verdict, Ms. Ly not only concealed her son but also persuaded Ms. Truong Yen Hoa, the victim's mother, to remain silent about Quang Cang Tri's whereabouts, thus hindering the investigation. "If the defendant had been willing to let justice be served... perhaps many tragic events would not have occurred," the judge emphasized. Having already served 16 months in detention, Ms. Ly Thuy Huong is expected to be released soon.

The context of the shocking murder case.

The case began on February 21, 2023, when the family reported that 28-year-old model Thai Thien Phuong was missing. Three days later, police discovered her body parts at a rented house in Tai Po, Hong Kong. The crime scene was gruesome, with body parts dismembered, some hidden in a refrigerator, while the skull and ribs were found in a large pot of soup. Police also seized a meat cleaver and an electric saw, indicating a premeditated murder plan.

Property disputes are the primary motivation.

Investigators believe the motive for the case stemmed from a dispute over a multi-million-dollar luxury apartment in Kadoorie Hill. The apartment was paid for by Thai Thien Phuong but registered under the name of her former father-in-law, Kwong Kwai. The conflict reportedly arose when she attempted to sell the property.

The suspects and the investigation process.

The main suspects accused of murder include the victim's ex-husband, Guang Gangzhi; his brother, Guang Gangjie (the victim's private driver); and her ex-father, Guang Qiu. Police have arrested a total of seven people in connection with the case, including Li Ruixiang, Guang Qiu's mistress, and two friends of Guang Gangzhi.

Quang Cang Zhi was arrested at a dock while attempting to flee by sea. Forensic examination revealed a blood sample from Thai Thien Phuong in the car driven by Quang Cang Jie.
