Formosa case: Demoted 1 Deputy General Director

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has implemented administrative discipline by demoting, reassigning, and transferring to another unit to work for 1 Deputy General Director.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has taken many measures to handle officials related to the responsibility of state management of natural resources and environment for Formosa Ha Tinh Company, causing a serious environmental incident, causing unusual deaths of seafood in 4 central provinces (Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien - Hue) in early April 2016.

Implementing the Party and State's regulations on enforcing Party discipline and administrative discipline against Party members and civil servants, the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has enforced Party discipline by removing from office a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the General Department of Environment for the 2015-2020 term, 1 Deputy General Director of the General Department of Environment.

At the same time, the Ministry has implemented administrative discipline in the form of demotion, arrangement, and transfer to another unit for this Deputy General Director.

The Party Committee and the General Director of the General Department of Environment, according to their authority, have also disciplined 2 department heads and 1 deputy department head by reprimand and warning, and at the same time arranged and transferred them to work in other units.

These are officials involved in the state management responsibility for natural resources and environment for Formosa Ha Tinh Company, which caused a serious environmental incident, causing unusual deaths of seafood in 4 central provinces (Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien - Hue) in early April 2016.

Immediately after the above incident, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proactively coordinated with relevant ministries, branches and localities to determine the cause and the subject causing the incident and take measures to overcome the consequences.

With the fierce and direct efforts of the Vietnamese side, Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation (Formosa Ha Tinh) admitted that it was the direct cause of the incident, accepted responsibility, apologized to the Vietnamese Government and people, compensated for the damage; and at the same time took measures to remedy the incident.

As an agency assisting the Government in unifying state management of natural resources and environment, the Party Committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has seriously organized reviews, self-criticism, taken political responsibility before the Party, State and people, and reported to competent authorities.

On the other hand, the Party Committee of the Ministry is requested to direct inspection and disciplinary action and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to review and administratively handle related organizations and individuals.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been seriously organizing to draw lessons, rectify and implement many measures to overcome shortcomings, limit shortcomings and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of environmental protection management in the coming time.
